Actually I find that I can get very good b&w up to 1600.. At 100-400 range it will give the monochrom a run for its money..IMHO. These days the dp Merrill is my default b&w camera.

If you really want to push things in post, the NEX7 is a much better option than the X-e1. I like the X-e1 for many reasons: quiet, dedicated shutter speed dial, better with wides.etc , but dynamic range is certainly not the X-e1's strong point.
Whatever extra tonality the M8's un-filtered CCD has in terms of B&W can be reproduced in silver EFEX in about 2-3 minutes. It's an elegant machine, but it is both horribly slow and virtually un-serviceable today.

The M8 is serviceable (only the LCD screen cannot be changed). I agree that anyone looking for an fps machine should consider something else.

My M8.2 has an "A" mode for aperture priority auto-exposure. It has, like pretty much all digital cameras, exposure compensation that can be used to control highlights when necessary. I haven't really seen many blown highlights with it. I don't know if the M8 has an "A" mode; but if not, the M8.2 does, and might be a better choice.

The screen and sensor are not replaceable due to diminished stock, quoting Leica NJ when I sent them an email about the issue. Leica can still fix shutter or alignment issues, though.
Also, most M8s out there are now 5-6 years old, which means they are out of warranty,and any type of repair will be exceedingly expensive. Why drop $1500 on something that can become totally worthless any moment?

Sensor replacements are still possible according to my sources. This information is from July. It is (sad) news to me if they are now out of sensors.

Toy plastic lens vs. glass lens from Leica / Nikon / Canon... sure. 50mm Summicron M vs. Planar ZM, not so huge.

Yes.. But it has always been a game of trade off.. For example..
- Panatomic-x vs plus-x vs tri-x, iso speed for grain vs overall iq.
- 4x5 vs 120 vs 35mm vs APS vs 110
- The last 5% gets very expensive and if u hand hold, is it really worth it.
In today's digital world, the first two equates to different sensor sizes.. For me and my reality (I print max of 13x19 and normally letter size), just about anything from and aboe 12mp sensor and/or one inch is good enough for me. As a gear head, I have settled into two main camera systems, Fuji and Sigma foveon, w/ occasional use of Olympus omd and Ricoh gxr w/ m module. For others that need to print really big or use very high iso, then a full frame or bigger sensor maybe the only thing that will do.
Here is a blog posting of a comparison between Panasonic gf6 vs Olympus omd vs Fuji xm1 at iso 200. Yes u can c the difference, but not at first glance and not unless u look at the 100% crops.. Granted these are w/ the kit zooms, too bad not w/ the Panasonic 20 vs the Fuji 27 or te Panasonic/Leica 25 vs Fuji 35, but what I am trying to say is that after this long post is that there are a lot of other factors involved as well and at end of the day only u know what is most important to u.. My apologies to the op for digressing.
