M8 filter question

This has ben discussed however after reading all the posts I am still a little confused.
Here is what I have.
M8 , 35cron V4 not coded
And a 39mm uv/ir
Now I don't think I can code the lens with a sharpie because
A mounting screw is in the way.
Should I shoot with or without the filter
When I don't have a coded lens?

You should put an IR-cut filter anyway, unless you shoot B&W of course. Coding is not necessary with this lens but you can get it coded by Leica.

That's what I thought. But I do want to shoot B&w

Hi, ir cut filter is needed when shooting in colour, if B/W it doesn´t matter.

Coding as i recall only benefits the jpeg files, raw ones don´t.

I have this lens, and I can't code it either, for the same reason. Thus far, I have not noticed any problem in my images, though.

1st -- coding effects all lenses, if only to generate an ID in the EXIF data.

With a 35m & longer lens, there is no light falloff, color shift for the corners to correct. With 28mm and wider there is. So coding is essential for 28mm & wider, DNG or JPG.

2nd -- the 35mm Summicron v4 is codable with Sharpie for the original mount. Mark over the screw, it has worked for me for years.

The UV/IR is essential for the M8 / M8.2 to filter the IR which can't otherwise be differentiated from purple in post. This for color only. If you shoot only B&W, do without the IR filtration and enjoy a little more depth in the shadows (blacks).
