Red Dot Cameras are advertising a limited edition M8.

Optimistic view

Great for collectors and will likely be worth a fortune in years to come if it is limited.

Pessimistic view

Leica are running out of black dials and switches. Whats happening

Odd decision... did they have a few too many parts left for a non-selling M8 (as opposed to M8.2)? How long before a silver M8 with black bits? :p

Nothing earth-shattering here. Leica has been doing special editions since the beginning. The first snakeskin-and gold ones, a series of 80 and later another 100 dates back to 1927... Afer that, with great regularity. So it seems a bit silly to read all kinds of dire scenarios in this one.

www.dalephotoanddigital.com are claiming this is limited to 100 units worldwide.

If so they sound like a good investment.

Dalephoto's image shows it with a red dot though. Are ther two versions out there or is this just a wind up?

Jaapv,

Please forgive the observation, but in this and previous threads you come across like a British politician when you defend Leica. Regardless of what the 'party' does, you nearly always find a way of defending it. Do you own the other 2%?

Personally I certainly don't want Leica to fail as I want backup if needed for my M8, but why would a successful businessman keep pouring money into a company if it is failing (I'm not suggesting it is failing, just speculating). It may only be a drop in the ocean of his wealth, and he may be on a personal mission to keep the company going but common sense will surely prevail if the camera side of the business s losing money.

This special edition is no more than the wrong dial, shutter release and frame selector bolted on. If limited to 100 as claimed by one seller, Leica know it will sell out quickly to those who collect such things just because they're different.

It's an easy way of making sure their dealers get some turnover and it cost them nothing in tooling, design or taste (in my opinion)

How many previous special editions have sold at (or close to) the standard price and been included in any rebate scheme?

If they do have problems, then reduce the price and sell more. By introducing the rebate, they have wrecked residual values now anyway. In the UK, secondhand M8s are seling for £300 to £400 less than before the rebate came into effect.

not feeling the anti-panda look. if you want a great looking m8, i don't think you can do better than the black paint m8.2.

The red dot is actually pretty ugly in my opinion on the black M8. I have a silver one to replace the red dot and it work. Even better than the black dot.
