I think there must be some kind of settings problem, because those shots with the 6000€ leica oufit look really ugly, blurry. The noctilux seems soft with some of veiling flare... anyway here is a 1952 summicron on a 6 megapixel sensor, shot at 2.8 with a bad light and high iso. Also a shot from the summicon of my lcd screen...

You'll learn a lot, the Linhof was my best investment so far. I suggest buying Leslie Stroebel's "View Camera Techniques" and then go for it - it will change the way you see for ever.
BTW - the Linhof 4x5 is a rangefinder 😉

The M8 pics presented here certainly doesn't look like film. If I was to pick between the two, I would have made the right choice by calling out the 1st pic as digital.

Hi all, I’m new in this forum, and I’m really enjoying this discussion, but if I may put my 2 cents in, I like to say that in the excitement of the launch of the M8 we are forgetting that a digital camera is only as good as it’s processor and lens combination. In this case the M8 has a great thing going for it, Leica lenses. The processor is another story, I believe that, with the current technology and Leica’s commitment to quality (not to mention price), the M8 processor is as good as any other SLRs out there, including the Canon 5D.
What I’m most interested in, is the reason why I shoot with the Leica M, witch is the rangefinder perspective, the speed, the unobtrusive quietness and durability, the way it feels in my hands and the way it connects with what I see.
To me a good image is a product of someone’s vision and a good photo can be taken with any camera really.
A digital Leica M, will only add to the ability of been able to see what you’re doing as your doing it. Witch to me is the only great thing about digital. An image is still an image, no matter if it is digital or film.
The more important question is, will this M model, perform as good as the other M’s, an extension of my eyes? (To quote CB)

Agreed. I was just glad to see that the Nocti character was alive and well with the M8. I've seen some beautiful Nocti/R-D1 shots, but that has got to be a tough combo to focus. Next I want to see some 50 asph shots with the M8

I'm new here, and this is my first posting here or anywhere for that matter. Well, here it is.
I was contacted by my camera sales guy today and was informed that he had files from the M8. The Leica rep had been to the store and the salesman had about ten minutes with the camera.
He ftp'd a couple of sample files to me (raw DNG) as I have been trying to get an answer as to what date - exactly - the cameras were coming in. The samples would have to do for now as he couldn't give me an answer regarding the camera. When we checked the metadata on the files, the firmware was version 1.06. Don't know that much about it, but from what I have been led to believe, this is supposed to be the final shipping version of the firmware. If someone else has already commented on this, or if I am wrong, please forgive me.
Before I get into some of my thoughts, it should be made clear that I am a film lover. I use a P45 on a Hasselblad V body at the studio (which is a hard thing to beat), but all my persional work is on film. When I found out that the M8 was to be a reality, it seemed like there might actually a tool that I could work with as a personal camera.
Here we go:
Regarding the files: (they were processed in C1 Pro) There was NO noise. The files were clean. They had been shot at 160 asa, so perhaps thats not such a great feat. One shot was of a sign in the store. Fine black type against a white background. There was NO color banding around the type. Even at 300% it held up with only the slightest of color shift at the edges. He didn't remember which lens had been used - unfortunately - but he thought it was a 50mm. Makes sense when looking at the shots - they were slightly on the telephoto side. Checked the data on the file, and there was no record of which lens had been used.
I found that the edges of the frame caused me some concern. The out of focus elements in the backgound corners looked as though they has been smudged with water - not very pleasant. It helped when I processed them out as 16 bit files, but it didn't go away. Not something that I had expected. I had thought that the off set lens design used in the chip should have removed this problem. I hope they will give the option of manually setting which lens is being used in future versions of the firmware - shouldn't be too difficult as they only make a limited number of focal lengths. I am only assuming the firmware will help fix the problem of the smudge if it knows which lens is being used.
That's really all that I could comment on from what I saw. The images were a bit basic to comment on anything more than that.
I look forward to getting my hands on one and shooting my own test files.
