M8 Sleepy at Power On?

I've noticed that my M8 remains asleep after turning it on. I have to partially depress the shutter to wake it up. I've tried a few of things including draining the battery, turning off "auto off" and resetting all the settings but the problem persists. The rest of the camera is unaffected and it continues to take wonderful pictures (although there does seem to be an occasional problem involving focus and composition that has to be an issue with the camera).

I've seen a few random mentions of others having this problem but I've never seen a real post on the matter. Are others having this issue to? Did it go away? Did you send the camera in?

I don't find this a big enough problem to send the camera in, but it is one more thing to help me rationalize paying for the shutter upgrade -- if I'm going to send it in anway, I mean...

Since I always leave the camera switched on, the normal way to wake it up is with a half-press. So I never noticed that the half press was required even when turning on from the off position - until relatively recently...is it possible that this quirk came along with FW 1.201?? A number of other quirks definitely started then - menu scrolling and related silliness, mostly. I don't find any of it to be a big deal, but I did find that it was a definite trade-off to get the immensely improved white balance...

Definitely agree there -- the 1.201 firmware is a huge improvement. If this is just a firmware glitch I'm happy to wait it out.

It is a known problem, it has been around for some time. It can be fixed by a trip to Solms. Most users that have it do not bother.

Is this a random defect or was it resolved in production at some point? Reason I ask is mine which is a serial # 3329xxx doesn't do it but someone I know who has a 3101xxx does.

Weird then. What causes it, the on/off switch? I would've thought it would be something controlled by firmware. Anyway, I tend not to turn the camera on and off frequently. When I'm going to shoot I turn it on when I take it out of the bag, and by the time I go to take the first shot it's usually asleep anyway so I have to press the button to wake it up

Mine, serial #31969xx started to do this a few days ago. It's not consistent though. Sometimes when switched on there's no battery or images remaining display and none of the menu buttons work. A quick press on the shutter release and everything is normal again. Other times it powers up immediately it's switched on.

Remember this? I just got an M8 from KEH and it exhibits this problem. I'm tempted to send it back and get one that powers on normally, but maybe I should just do the always-on thing that some people do, and not worry about it. Or has some other solution surfaced in the intervening years?

Ha! Never mind. KEH had an identical camera in stock, so I called customer service, bought that one on credit, and will return this one for a refund when it arrives. I'll just use the quirky one over the weekend. Still: this is a weird problem.
