M8 with elmar 50mm 2.8???danger???

Hi all.

Can I use a 50mm 2.8 elmar fully closed on my M8?
This do not damege the ccd?

No. Leica does not recommend collasping lenses on the M8. It is not the sensor that would be damaged, but the shutter. The M8's shutter does not sit as deeply as on other M bodies. You can use the lens, but do not collasp it.
 
You can Guiherme. Wrap a rubber band or something around the barrel of the lens to keep it from collasping. It's a great lens.
 
Sorry to contradict earlier responses, but you can use the current 50/2,8 Elmar on the M8 and you can collapse it fully without it damaging anything. The wording in the instruction manual is unsatisfactory.

I raised the point with a Leica rep at a demo day and in front of me, he collapsed one on an M8 and twisted it round - with no painful consequences. I have since used and collapsed it on mine and lived to tell the tale.

Some older lenses collapse much further than the 50 Elmar (eg the collapsible 90) and obviously would cause damage.
 
Paul is right. The Elmar M (current) is more than 2 mm shorter than the depth of the camera to the shutter and can be collapsed without any problem. I have been doing it on my both M8 bodies for over a month now, have fired the shutter with the lens collapsed without any ill effects. It is a mystery why Leica does not recommend it.

Is the answer different for a 1960 vintage Elmar M 50/2.8? Not that I have an M8, but inquiring minds want to know.

I don't know about the old 50/2.8, but an old 50/3.5 nickel from a Leica standard is also OK. A SA/3.4 works. I still haven't bothered to check the Hologon 15, but it wouldn't be much use anyway. I think the 90/4 collapsible sticks in the furthest, so I would be careful with that one. Otherwise, I believe you're OK.

I'll have to start a major excavating action. I have one somewhere, but I cannot find it to measure it....:( As soon as I find it I'll do so.
 
Found it! I measure 19.6 mm. About 3 mm to spare. I'll do a side by side shot tonight.
 
One recommendation, to keep lenses from going all of the way in, was to use Dymo lable tape, and put it on the barrel. The tape is available in various widths, so you can still colapse the lens somewhat, just not all of the way. This was a recommendation for some M's that had a sensor in front of the shutter.
