Magnifier Options - Advice

Searching high and low and there seems to be only two options for a magnifier: the sold out megaperls (can't find one used yet) and the Nikon DG-2. I have the dg2 and for me it is useless as you can't read the LED readout and you can't see the frame lines. I know the RD-1 has a 19mm thread so searched that too with no luck! Any other options out there?

The eyepiece diameter for the R-D1 is the same as the Nikon FM2: 19mm, so any eyepiece that screws on to the FM2 will work for the R-D1.

You might want to check out this auction -- not my auction, and I have no relationship to the seller. I am NOT even sure it will work, since I know nothing about those Canon bodies, but I do think their VF's are also 19mm.

May be worth a look as a last resort.

Thnx. The only Nikon 19mm magnifier out there seems to be the DG-2. Amazingly, none of the ebay sellers can tell me the thread size of the Tenpa. I even emailed the company and they never responded.

My opinion is that the 1:1 ratio of the finder in it's stock state is one of the most brilliant aspects of the RD-1. You'll lament it's loss the second it's gone.

Elsewhere on this forum, there is a current thread where someone posted about having a custom adapter made up so he could use a Leica diopter adjustment lens on a Contax 11a rangefinder. Did not cost that much.

Seems that it may be possible depending on the diameter of the exit pupil on the RD-1. You may wish to investigate doing something similar with a suitable magnifier if you can find one of appropriate diameter - would one for Leica R work?. ( I imagine an add-on magnifing lens could be problematic if it were too small in diameter for the camera finder's diameter.) I am not sure whether the distance from the finder caused by having an adapter would be a problem for a magnifier. If it is too far back I suppose the exit pupil effectively becomes smaller.

Incidentally, I see what you mean about the RD-1 magnifier from Megaperls / Japan Exposures. Their site says the are no longer being made and they are out of stock.

One final thought. I think I have seen some generic finder magnifiers advertised on eBay to suit Nikon and other SLRs - some of which might suit.

the magnifier I use comes from japanexposures and is of good help for my 50mm from 1.4 to 1.1
for lenses down to f/2, there is no need for a magnifier, the r-d1 finder is accurate enough.
Unless you also need a diopter correction, in which case, opt for the japanexposures magnifier which does embed such adjustable correction.

Someone was good enough to respond to my WTB ad on getdpi. Here is what he offered. I never heard of this option and it seems it may be just as hard to get as a megaperls. Here is the description, "Miyazaki Optical Magnifier Eyepiece. This eyepiece is one of Miyazaki-san's prototypes, so differs slightly from the final production version i.e. 1.25x ." So now I know where the MS comes from as the megaperls is aka MS Mag.
