Mamiya 7 shutter question

Hi, I just bought a Mamiya 7 and 3 lenses about an hour ago and have a quick question.. I have been trying to fire the shutter without a film inside but nothing is happening, when I have the film door open and press the shutter button it fires ok. My question is do i have to have a film inside before i can set off the shutter.

That is correct, you need to have film inside. Does the light meter inside work when you turn it on?

Shoot a roll of Tri-X pushed to 1600, you'll be amazed at the sharpness and low grain.

That should be perfectly normal, IIRC it does only fire with film inserted or open back.

you can also fire the shutter if you have the back open
