New York March NYC Meet-Up

Cal, with a 50mm lens attached it serves as a pretty good microscope!

I take it that with a 50, all three tubes should be in place, so that it is as close as possible to the negative (for 135 size)

I also assume that the eyepiece is magnifying the view to serve as a focussing aid, and I should NOT be able to see the edges of the mask.

For the APS sensor with 1.5 crop I would need a 50/1.5 = 33 mm lens, so I tried a 35 - it is not possible to focus, it would need to be much close than the gadget permits.

Looks like I need a full frame sensor - hey, the Leica SL looks nice!

Randy,
Having a crop sensor and a 50mm lens means that at 1 to 1 you are only getting the central portion of your negative i.e. you are enlarging. To get the full negative on an aps-c requires less magnification than 1 to 1, so it should be possible with the beoon. You may need a macro calculator to figure out the ideal extension tube configuration.
 
I haven't been able to make it to any meet up this year, but the 13th looks good for me this time.
So hopefully I can make it up.

Perhaps towards the end of the month, but more likely April for the mild weather.

POSTSCRIPT: What is the mode of transportation that you use to ferry back and forth from Philly to NYC. Also what is the cost and amount of time required for travel? A ways back we took some bus that brought us close to the convention center. We did an overnight in Center City and went to the big flower show one spring.

If I understand the German directions, the with the right choice of tube I get 1:1.5 ; that should mean that the 35mm mask should fit exactly - I will try it

I like taking the train, either NJ transit or Amtrak if I'm going from philly.
I usually drive to the train station in NJ though and then take NJ transit.
Which is about $30 round trip plus parking.
Amtrak is usually $55-70 each way.
You can take NJ transit to Trenton then switch to a Septa Regional Rain train which goes into Philly, but that takes a long time.
I've done that once, and remember it taking about 3 hours.
Amtrak is much quicker from Philly, about an hour and a half.

The flower show starts this weekend here in Philly, should be a great display, the theme is national parks.
 
GEAR ALERT: Jon lent me his Nikon 58/1.4 AF-G and it basically makes D3X a great camera for Maggie's blog. I ended up securing a 9+ conditioned 58/1.4 at B&H boxed complete with instructions, hood and pouch. The SN is only 61 higher than John's lens.

I'll try and edit some prints to show you. its been a while...

Really groovin with the chrome 65/3.5 Visoflex lens on the black SL2-MOT. Looks evil and that lens has a real snappy focus on the SL2 VF'er. BTW the new SL is pretty much around the same size as my SL2, and that camera kinda feels mucho solid like my SL2. I currently have no money, but I already bought a T to M-mount adapter. Interesting to note that the adapter interfaces with the 6-bit coding of all my modern Leica glass. I'm hoping the same is true for my 50 Lux-R "E60" that has ROM contacts.

Anyways still early (no money) and the "R" adapter still isn't out yet. It is expected later this year.

Wow: what a difference a day makes.

I was off of work both yes-stir-day and Tuesday enjoying the weather and even had time to give Baby Dog a bath so I can't call him "Frito" or "Frito Lindo" because he no longer smells like corn chips. My legs are rubbery due to some time in the saddle bike riding...

So I was minding my own business being a lazy slacker, but now I feel kinda terrorized and anxious because not only am I carrying about $30K worth of camera gear to work, but I kinda have a gig where I'll be shooting in a 7,600 square foot luxury penthouse that is currently for sale listed at 58.5 million dollars. Ironically the location is not far from Puck Fair.

Anyways life has become one big improve, and I'm reminded of how sick to my stomach I use to get when I was a performance artist right before I had a show. Believe it or not at one point in my life I was a creature of the theater and performed at The Joseph Papp Public Theater by Astor Place and off Broadway at Second Stage Theater. Anyways I have a big case of stage fright combined with performance anxiety, and know that I'm really over the top.

Anyways crazy things are happening. Maggie is getting interviewed by a big video crew, and I'm tagging along to shoot for her blog. Of course I only found out about this gig yesterday. Maggie was not sure I could attend until the last moment.

This event is for a huge real estate company that likely is the biggest, or at least the one that is known for the high end luxury market in New York.

Also know that there is yet another terror attack scheduled for next month where a luxury home furnishings retailer like's/loves the way we invade spaces and go ghetto and street style to capture images for Maggie's blog. This luxury retailer is planing a champain around our guerilla tactics. Anyways my street style kinda got Maggie the gig.

Know that a manager was on our "six" at Barneys so we kinda got close to almost getting a cease and desist just last weekend, like we did at new Rose-oll-E Bookstore where they charge photographers $1K and hour to use their store as a studio for shooting.

You are correct, not my usual gear. Generally I buy unusual retro stuff. Never thought I would get excited over an autofocus lens. The 28/1.4 AF-D is kinda rare, and more rare than my Noct-Nikkor. That's more of my profile.

BTW the autofocus of the 58/1.4 seems to have a faster autofocus than the older 28/1.4 AF-D.

So yesterday's excursion into a 58.5 million dollar penthouse was both interesting and perhaps a bit traumatizing knowing that somehow I am left out of living life so fully.

So imagine a penthouse that makes you feel like you are not in NYC, but in perhaps Hollywood Hills in California. The real estate broker explained how unusual it is to have a penthouse that offers privacy. Basically an elevator opens to your floor, but also the terrace wraps around on three sides. The kitchen and dinning nook opens to a terrace that is private, and the real estate person mentioned that one could go outside and eat on their terrace in their underwear.

The master bedroom had separate bathroom for the man and a separate bathroom for the woman. In the woman's bath was a soaking tub and the mirror on the vanity I was told also converts into a TV. The man's bathroom featured a steam shower. Of course on the terrace was also a hot tub. On the terrace also was a separate room with a bathroom that was set up as a stand alone space that would be great as a private studio. Also know that on the terrace was installed a large flatscreen TV over the gas fireplace that was deemed weatherproof.

At only 10 and 11 stories (second floor) there were unobstructed views of midtown from the great room that was perhaps 35x60 feet. Off the hallway was a refrigerated wine closet with glass doors that would be ideal place to hoard my film and photo paper.

Anyways this penthouse was obscene, but the funny thing is that I easily could imagine living there. 7,600 plus square feet of interior space, all the floor to ceiling windows, and perhaps 2000-2500 square feet of outdoor space has lots of possibilities.

Maggie said she could be happy with just the kitchen and the great room. Anyways lots of possibilities...

Anyways this would be a great place to have a Meet-Up. LOL.

Stuff to bring to Sunday's Meet-Up: Bob's scarf; Magnification table from Leitz for Randy and also photo copy of instructions in English; John's thumb drive and Nikon 58/1.4 AF-G.

GEAR ALERT: I'll be bringing my new T-mount to M-mount adapter. One day I hope to own a Leica SL (digital) to use it. Funny thing is that the new SL is about the same size as my 1975 black SL2-MOT. BTW the new SL will read the 6-bit coding on my M-mount lenses. Hoping that this will also be true with the "R" adapter (read my ROM contacts).

See everyone Sunday. I will be bringing some new prints.
