New York March RFF New York Meet-up?

A great meetup! My only regret is I will miss the next few ones while I am in Europe, I hope you guys don't forget me while I'm gone!

hi, looks like you fun meet :) would have been nice to join again, but wasn't in country anymore. maybe one day again!

Thanks, Tung! Greatly appreciated. Apparently, I was rushing out of the door.

Andre - The waitress was asking your whereabouts. Not sure what her reaction would be had she seen your daughter. See some pics for the fun you missed this time.

John

John, thanks for the pics!

And obviously, the waitress would have marveled at my virility ;)

A very relaxed meet-up. We'll have to figure out what time works for next weekend's willets trip.

There's been a lot of bad subway service in Queens over the last month. Hopefully the 7 train is not going to be a problem.

I figure we need to preserve this place before it becomes a victum of eminent domain. Also I wanna shoot this lonely place at night. For me this is just scoping out the area during the day. I plan on doing the MF film with tripod thing at night.

damn, it's too bad i missed this past meet-up again! is that someone's black G2 i see? and john, did you bring your perar to show off?

if i can, i'd like to join in on this willet's point trip you guys are planning. and funny thing, scott, "Chop Shop" was what inspired me to go shoot the area couple years back. so i second his recommendation!

also, if you guys want to get a taste of what it feels like to shoot there at night do check out my flickr set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/slowbicycler/sets/72157606146609691/

John,

No problem, I'll bring it next time. Gonna list it on eBay for half of a million dollars?

Tung

It needs to be half a million and one minimum.
As others have said it, it was a relaxed meetup. Unfortunately I had to run out in a hurry. I'm putting chop shop on my netflix already.

There was a nice black G2 with 21mm lens there. I didn't bring my perar because it was in Japan for adjustment. Should be back today. Unfortunately, my M8 is in repair until Monday and my Bessa doesn't accept a 35mm. I'll bring it to the next meet-up.

Ok, so how about Saturday for the Willets trip all? It seems to be the day with the best weather (at this point in time). I'm available either day, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

It was a great meet-up as usual! I really dig Puck Fair (and their burgers). As usual great people and so many nice toys to play with. The black G2 was incredibly sweet... and the R3a too... Argh these meetups risk to become a threat to my wallet.
The trip to willets is a cool idea, will see if I can make it

Saturday works for me.

+1

So its Saturday... What time. Andre also suggests going over to Jackson Heights for a little excursion, but Tung knows some great places to eat in Flushing.

Let's call this the New York Rangefinder Road Show.

Cal

I hope I can make it to the Iron Triangle on Saturday. Its been a while. If we can make it out there early-ish in the morning when the light is nicer that would be ideal. That place is a goldmine for photography.

Yes, Jackson Heights on Roosevelt ave is a good spot for street photography. Plus, we can eat almojabanas (colombian cheese bread thingy's).

Dunstan,

Last night I loaded my F3 with Noct-Nikkor with Tri-X at 1000 ISO and shot a roll and a half after 7:00 PM hand held. Most of the shots were nearly wide open or fully open using 1/15th and 1/30th. Basically I wanna see how steady am I with this big heavy camera.

To night I'll do the same but add a monopod.

Cal

Cal, that sounds like fun! and i would say a monopod is definitely the way to go, especially if you're shooting in the Willet's Point wasteland after dark...you want to be fully mobile.

btw, i've finally gathered up most of the supplies i need to start developing. now i just need to shoot off a couple rolls.

Dunstan,

How are you doing with loading reels? Andre has gotten some fantastic results. Also the contrast compression of Diafine is a great asset for your night shooting.

I've got 25 rolls of film to develope before Saturday. Looks likev I'll have one of my marathon sessions.

BTW my monopod is a very sturdy Gitzo that's accually made for a 18 pound video camera. The added weight definately helps stabilize the camera. My F3 rig with motordrive is just under 5 pounds. To me a heavy camera is a steady camera.

BTW Queens Plaza at night is really great to shoot at night.

Cal,

my next step is to practice loading in the changing bag, but i think i should be fine. i'm definitely looking forward to testing out the diafine. and yeah, andre sure got some nice shots, especially from that beautiful M5 of his!

Dunstan: just make sure to get the hewes/omega/tundra reels. For YEARS, I dreaded developing because loading the reels was so frustrating for me (I'm not dextrous AT ALL). Anyway, those reels practically load themselves and for the first time developing is fun for me. Big thanks to Cal for the heads up on the reels and also Diafine: the slackers choice for B&W development!

I completely agree: I first got cheap SS reels and HATED them so much, that I went to adorama the same day and got Hewes ones. I never had a problem loading film afterwards. (although I'm pretty good at messing up in other ways - for example developing with fixer. bad bad thing)
