Maximizing DR in JPEG

I'm leaving tonight for a two-week vacation to visit mine and my wife's families. I've got a hefty amount of SD card space, but I have a contingency of backing up to the iPad as well. As a result, I'm shooting RAW plus JPEG. But because I only just bought the SD card reader for the iPad, I have no experience with it and worry that I *could* lose some RAW files in the mix.

Given that, I'm looking to set my JPEG settings in a way that will give me the most "RAW-like" headroom to play with. I'll be shooting in DR200 I think (or DR-auto; anyone have experience with this?), because I usually find it to be a good compromise between additional DR and forcing the ISO too high by default.

What I'm curious about, though, is the JPEG settings. Particularly the film simulation and highlight and shadow tone settings. I remember seeing that the default Provia had more DR than Velvia (obviously) or Astia (surprising, to me at least). What I'm not sure about are the two Pro-neg modes. And I'm not clear at all on how the highlight and shadow tone controls work and might give me a little bit more retention.

I'd not be too concerned because I've never come close to filling my media on other trips, but there's a new nephew to visit. And the SD Card reader will let me give pictures to my sister in law immediately, as opposed to weeks later when I finally get them out of Lightroom.

So any thoughts on the JPEG settings?

Thanks,

Will

While I'm a neophyte to the Fuji X series, you could shoot Raw in camera and process the raw files afterwards in-camera to make a series of JPEGs with whatever film mode you choose.

Or just buy extra cards and amass your raw files for processing at home afterwards.

I think when you shoot raw+JPEG that both are transfered over to the iPad, but you can't see the raw files unless you have an app that reads them, or when you sync your tablet to your PC back home via iTunes.
