Pennsylvania May NYC Meet-UP/May Philly Megabus Trip

Wouldn't looking through your cameras viewfinder do the same?

John,

Yes. No denighing that, but if you are holding a deadly weapon in plain sight I would think that a bad guy might pick another mark.

A cell phone does not make a good weapon, but a M-body with a wrist strap, TA Rapidgrip, and TA Rapidwinder with one strike will destroy any attacker's eye socket in one blow. The dagger for the Rapid winder also can be used to stab someone.

My Nikon F3P with or without the MD-4 when using the Nikon AH-4 handstrap is another deadly weapon.

Stuff happens, but if in a situation I have no problem sacrificing a camera for my personal safety. When I did TV Broadcast news, way back when, I was in a dangerous situation, pretty much already made the decision to smash an $80K rig into an assailant. We are talking an Ickagami broadcast video camera with an amazing zoom.

If I have to break a camera: oh-well.

I don't think your attacker is an equipment geek Cal! ;)

Philippe checked in with me. It is unlikely he will be able to attend. Presently he is traveling thoughout Asia.

Philippe mentions Hong Kong as being a shooter's paradise. Pretty much Cantonese, but in the adjoining mainland that use to be Canton, Cantonese is reported to have been displace by Mandarin.

John,

I think any bad guy will evaluate the person/persona and look for any vulnerability.

Remember the UFC like vigil-aunt-Tee we met on 116th Street in East Harlem. That self proclaimed bounty hunter took down a reported 27 men by stalking them and waiting until they were preoccupied when talking and engaging with someone, all with a single blow.

Seems like a good strategy, and Phil above is correct, you always have to be ready and minimize your vulnerability.

Remember how he presented and broadcast the situation by announcing: "You are the guy that XXXX'ed my wife."

Another clever ploy, because it let's everyone within earshot to understand the who, what, when and why; and let's everyone know to mind there own business.

BTW what time zone are you in in Chile?

John,

My new Linhof's would annoy you. LOL. Of course they both sport grips, and are big and heavy. True "Monsters," I say, and all with factory supplied accessories.

It seems the Linhof's are not commonly seen, especially on the street, yet the camera stands out in a bold way that I like. It seems to cause engagement with people, and I was asked by one girl, "Is that a Polaroid camera?" The model disguised as the hostess at Lorelie's also asked me if I needed a model. This gal is unbelievably tall and skinny. Just call me shorty.

So I mention to Christian that over the years I have not seen any Linhof's "In the wild" and Christian reported that likely they are only used in the studio due to their bulk and weight. I brought up that the first impression might be that the guy shooting a Linhof in NYC for street might be a little crazy or unstable, and Christian's response was, "Their first impression might be right."

No one likes to hassle, fight or attack someone crazy, because anything can happen. James Brown once said, "I don't know Kung-Fu, but I know crazy."

So I started and began my Linhof free gym membership and have been carrying a Baby Linhof around the past few days. My tech IV rigged out with a 120 back weighs about 7 and a half pounds. I think the Tech V with the 53 Biogon will likely be very close to eight pounds, so it is like carrying a gallon of milk.

I now can do 10 chin-ups in a set. My goal is 15 in a set. Not bad for a 59 year old.

Maggie this morning reports to have 130K followers. Negociations are ongoing for another trip to China. There are trips this month to Portugal, London for meetings, parties and a shoot; and as they pronounce in New Mexico Mad-Rid for Madrid for a magazine shoot. Pretty much May is booked.

For some reason Maggie has been featured in many foreign versions of Vogue, Harpers, and Elle magizine, but there is a report of her being in the May USA Harpers.

So my current idea is to take advantage of Maggie's absence to shoot and develop mucho film. In another thread on the Fuji GFX a point was made about the cost of IQ, and how film is mucho bang for the dollar. So instead of going digital medium format, I'm going medium format film to take it to the next level. For color slides, and for B&W 120 negatives.

I think wet printing will one day be in my future.

Trying to keep you up to date. Since you left I have been a little crazy with the Linhof Disease.

BTW what time zone are you in?

Currently one hour ahead of NYC. Soon to be the same time as NYC.

I've been steadily using my Fujis on the streets here. When I use the big zoom, security guards tell me to be careful and hide the camera. With primes, nothing. Haha.

Unfortunately, it seems I have a job teaching English already, so some of that time on the streets will be taken (as well as what my GF requires). Good news is that I've been eating healthier and I'm going to the gym (with a personal trainer my GF wanted to have). I've lost a bit of weight already. I'm the opposite of you... I can see a huge advantage to the Fuji GFX for me due to the landscape stuff I can do here, it fitting in with my typical workflow, and the fact that I most likely will never wet print again.

Stop being a wimp with that Linhof and feed it some proper 4x5 sheet film.

John,

I can see the GFX being a great tool for you. Also the new camera for you will be seamless. If I win the lottery I surely would buy you one. Today I will buy lottery tickets, so wish us luck.

At the last Meet-Up Joe brought some prints. A few were from film negatives digitized using a A7 Nikon macro set-up that Joe spackle'ed together. Anyways the results were impressive. It seems Joe bought another 3880 and set it up with Piezography Pro.

Anyways seeing the smoothness and look of the film negatives was impressive. Definitely a different medium.

On that GFX thread Skiff made a stand for the big negative, shooting slides, wet printing, and going high ended with drum scans; but I can see you doing some serious/crazy work in Chile with a GFX.

Say hello to the cats for me.

Today it was slow at work so I worked on my Linhof prototype Tech V getting it ready and rigged for the 53 Zeiss Biogon. What a crazy camera, and definitely a true "Monster."

Pro-Mone,

I day traded with Christian and now own the old real leather clad 4x5 Tech IV from the early 50's. I love the worn patina on this Linhof. I surely will be doing some crazy 4x5 work.

Currently I'm doing some body building to get ready for the heavier cameras.

Cal

POSTSCRIPT: Linhof Disease has spread to include a 1958 2x3 tan Technika IV with a 100/2.8 Zeiss Planar; a Technika V prototype that has no serial number in the accessory shoe that offers no movements on the front or rear standards, effectively making it a "Linhof Folder" that I am rigging out as 6x9 version of a SWC with a 53/4.5 Zeiss Biogon. When I get around to it I'll be shooting the 4x5.

Well buy some grafamatics and try to find a Sinar multiformat back. The grafamatics ar nice for 4x5 film and the sinar goes from 6x9 to 6x12. You can even get a 6x17 back if you have lenses with enough coverage. Linhofs are nice but can't beat the Ebonys with the asymmetrical movements (or the Canham if you like metal).

Pro-Mone,

I love to get an Ebony one day. I would favor an 8x10 to contact print on AZO.

All I need is time and money. LOL.

Seems like my kit is filling out.

That's great. Although I am not native english speaker I do have quite a decent mastery of the language. There are quite some recollections about people teaching English in Asia too and having an interesting tropical lifestyle. I've got a BBA but there is something interesting about teaching.

There is a NYT article I haven't yet read well, "Go east" IIRC it is named, talking about a better lifestyle in non-Western societies.

Cal you've been completely taken over by Linhof mania and I would say again a 8x10 is not far ahead.
I think by appealing some very traditional shooting and exploiting the Japanese manners with an Ebony 8x10, you would get a respected space at the sidewalks.

April was crazy and chaotically structured, my original move plans have kind of fallen apart and drained quite a bit of energy. Cal had a term when talking about fashion, "project (something)" about being one day in and the other out. That is.

I guess it was just about getting ready for a lifestyle change and it has come another way but without a move. I did take more nerves than necessary the last 15 days.

Definitely you do also feel another perception of time. Also, being close to summer now days are feeling strangely long in the northern hemisphere.

T Cal had a term when talking about fashion, "project (something)" about being one day in and the other out. That is.

Jorde,

The term I used was borrowed from a show called "Project Runway" which was a reality competition that involved fashion designers designing and fabricating clothes for a runway show under impossible deadlines. The top three each got a runway show during NYC Fashion Week for a collection they had to design.

Hi-Dee Klum the super model who once was married to Seal would say at the elimination at the end of each episode to the candidates that might be eliminated, "In fashion, one day you are in, the next day you are out."

This was one of the first reality shows, and it won many awards.

Currently I am in my research lab working on one of my Linhofs. On this Technika V prototype I was mighty clever in figuring out a way to lock the top bed into the body to be able to get infinity focus with the 53 Biogon. Friday I received the Linhof cable release that mounts in the left grip.

Unfortunately the 70mm hood I also bought on EBAY is supersized and is meant for a mucho bigger Linhof. I tried the 70mm adapter off the hood with the interchangable smaller hood from the 100 Planar, but it vignettes. Oh-well. Perhaps now I have a reason to buy a big 4x5 lens to fit the $19.95 Linhof hood I bought on EBAY. LOL.

The Tech V rigged out to shoot with a 120 back weighs 7.84 pounds on my digital bike scale. The camera looks evil.

Cal

Cal, you are online on Saturday????? are you not feeling well?

Jean-Marc,

And Sunday as well. I am back at the lab again picking up a beloved Linhof.

I will be heading home shortly and will be shooting 35mm film.

I used a 24 hour structural epoxy to re attach the lower RF window on the side rangefinder on the Tech V. I decided to let it cure rather than compromise any strength by moving during transport.

Lately it seems luck has been so concentrated that it is beyond coincidence. At this point I believe in "Divine Intervention" because of so much remarkable luck that is stacking up.

This RF window just happen to pop off suddenly for no reason on my couch. Know that there were plenty of opportunities to have lost an important part of the camera. Finding a black 6x7 120 back for $50.00 is kinda like a miracle, and the enameled Linhof badge I happen to notice was loose and also was ready to be lost.

Anyways I have a big list of where bad things could of happened, yet they did not happen.

Cal

Linhof disease would be it.

I am no senior so don't have a "my office" equivalent but can see why it can be nice and useful. Specially as Cal said about cramped home.
Empty workplace can be curious. At uni the train left me early and free newspapers was quite nice. Mind your business and not be bothered.

Love those moments when things always seem to go up well. Perhaps I left some divine intervention in NY as after mid '16 I didn't get to chain lucky events. Ofc always could be worse.
There's also the side of "luck does not exist" rather it is whatever else. May agree too.

Yesterday morning "Maggie" had 132K followers, and by bedtime she hit 140K. This morning, within 24 hours her number of followers hit 147K, or 15K followers in a day.

Later this month she has a shoot in Bar-Cell-lone-A, that had been moved from Mad-Rid (Madrid), for a major magazine shoot.

It seems like the model releases got the approval from Maggie's agent for the book on modern romance that involves inclusion. We were told that our section in this coffee table book is substantial. It was a fun project, and I loved the photographer and crew.

Also yesterday another box of clothes came, and this morning there were requests for half a dozen interviews. It seems there were several blog sites that made reference to an ordinary college professor becoming a fashion icon that has given Maggie a virus.

May is booked for trips to London, Portugal and Spain. A good opportunity for me to develop film.

Cal

I reported 147K this morning, and now at 1:30 PM this afternoon "Maggie" reports 152K followers. The surge continues.

Earlier in the week I dropped off the 1958 Linhof Technica IV at Nippon Camera Clinic. They are the new Linhof service center in the U.S. Yesterday I find out it will take 3-4 weeks to have my Tech IV CLA'ed.

The 100mm Zeiss Planar has a slow shutter and is sticky around 1/10th second. The cost is not cheap, but basically in a few weeks this shelf queen will be like a brand new Tech IV.

Assembled weight with a 6x7 120 roll film back is just under 7 1/2 pounds.

The Linhof Technika V is just under eight pounds with the mucho heavy 53 Biogon. The rangefinder on this camera is muy bright. I need my PLC to help me cam the lens. This camera is a true "Monster."

Cal

Perhaps you you start a new thread called "Maggie" where you can track her likes, followers, and modelling schedule rather than intersperse such information throughout the photo threads. That way it would be readily accessible to those who are interested in such information.
