All shots with the Yashica 635 TLR
Man, the second and third shot you could walk into, incredible detail.
What lens is on that 635, I have one but I guess I've never shot it stopped down. Wide open it has the dreaded "swirly bokeh" effect, nice shots Duncan.

Cost. Mass.
Cost. Mass.
I think it's first a cost thing. Then a mass thing for the auto aperture. Even totally manual apertures in newer Copal view camera lenses have 5 blades. I have one older Copal shutter with 7 blades. My oldest view camera lens (from 1907 or 1908) has 18 blades.

Though I have to wonder why five blades are the standard in MF. Especially among Zeiss lenses for the 'blad.

My Kiev 88 finally jammed (as I knew it would eventually). So I'm waiting for a Hasselblad C/M along with a 120mm planar and a couple of backs. So I should be in MF heaven by next week.
The first photo is from the Kiev.
The next two are older negs from the early 80's photographed with a Hasselblad C.

Look at 35mm SLR lenses. Fewer blades reduces mass and inertia so they can close and open quickly. Same principle for MF lenses. I'll count my SMC Takumar blades tonight. I seem to recall 7-8 blades.

My 21mm f/3.4 Super Angulon has only four (curved) blades while my 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit has twelve. It's probably less likely to get out of focus highlights with a 21.

I'm feelling the love for the 'blad here, it's like a Hassy Posse
. How about it Keith, did you ever get your 500cm?

The best camera is one that still works!

Yep ... I've had this damned 500CM body sitting here staring at me for a couple of weeks now and it's driving me insane. Being determined to keep this Hassy adventure within a budget that makes sense means other anciliaries are coming slowly but surely as I find bargains.
Hopefully the next thing to arrive will be the 80mm CF lens I paid for in the US the other day ... the woman I bought it from was really hard work so I hope the lens is as good as she stated ... or better still I just hope it gets here!
Starting a dedicated Hassy thread was a nice move!

I just spent an hour going through this thread and am humbled by all of the awesomeness here. My first foray into medium format was with a Ricoflex DIA that I purchased at the local swap meet for $5. This shot is from my first roll.

Order from freestyle. The cost of film in Canada is outrageous.

so far that appears the case. i am one of those "try and support my local guy" types though so i thought i'd give it a go.
almost triple the price does equal "order from freestyle" though

You will have to do the math, but Canadians ordering from Freestyle incur three additional costs: 1] shipping for U.S. $22.83 (Freestyle's cheapest), 2] whatever the current exchange rate is (not too bad right now), and 3] $8 Cdn for Canada Post to "handle" your goods. Generally you watch a great deal get expensive quickly, often more than it would cost buying locally.
I buy locally if possible.
John, you might check out Silvano's in Toronto; they have a website. I don't know what would be available in Montreal, if that's where you still are. I'd be surprised if you paid triple the Freestyle price by the time you've paid the unadvertised extras. PST & GST get added regardless.
