migrating to m9...

I like the way bizarrius puts it as an add on to how I feel. I shot film also primarily so I could use a Leica or rangefinder. Now I have an M9 I realise I don't need to shoot film to get that feeling.

when i migrated to leica i did it to use film, i never thought i would go back to digital. i was happy with the leica but i didnt realise that using a leica made me happy instead of using film.
i thought that it was film that made my love for photography grow bigger by the minute.
when i ended up developing 10 rolls every sunday and had to do contacts, prints, evaluate, scan etc. i started looking at smething that would give me more time to shoot than inhale chemicals and make a mess out of the kitchen. at first it was the m8 checking out, the iso and the 1.3x kept me away from it.
then i started looking at the m9 even if i didnt have the money for it.
a sudden change of plans in my life gave me a few more bucks so i went for it.
turns out high iso is never what i wanted, since i sold the d700 a year ago and the m9 never goes higher than 400 for color and the black and white pictures look amazing even with 2500.

my regrets are for all the money i spent on nikon, mamiya, pentax and film leicas before i realised that all i needed was the m9. every day i find my self surprised of how tis camera fits my hands, eyes and brain. its like this camera was made for me.

so yea, i know the op only started this thread to have an excuse to migrate. we are just waiting to see if you are going for the black or the chrome now :D

i don't need an excuse...i need the money!!
;)

This sounds EXACTLY like me, minus that i havent been able to sell my d700 and nikon stuff. I dunno. . . M8.2 or m9 or wait till prices drop more. How long will i wait? With the dollar the way it is, maybe longer than I'd want :bang:

The Leicas can take many pictures my FF SLRs can't because I'm not willing to drag that much size and weight around on a daily basis when I'm not sure that i'll need the SLRs.

There's room for all.

Yes, to me the Digital Ms and Film Ms are both great... I really don't enjoy film anymore... so M9 owner as of today (previously M8.2 + M3).

I just can't bring myself (so far) to sell lenses in order to get the body.

I hear you. But I did it, ruthlessly paring down the "nice-to-haves" to the ones I use a lot. I miss only one, and not that much. I have the camera. Time will tell, but I think I did what's better for me.

He doesn't have a cron or an M8.

I am interested in what Joe thinks about my options.

I did the math for Joe. Selling both bodies and five of the six lenses would get him very close to a second hand M9 at a projected price several months from now of US$5500. I really am not sure if it would be worth it.

It sounds like you did the right thing.

I do two types of subjects. Landscapes and People. For landscapes I really want a 21 or 24, a 50, and a 135, preferably as light and compact as possible. For people, I really want 35 and 75, but the images from the C Sonnar are so lovely, I will often chose it for people even though it isn't the FL I want. Using both film and the 1.3x crop M8 together has left me more than a little confused.

It is confusing. With the M8 I carried an 18, 28 or 35, and C Sonnar (which I like a great deal too). My film kit was another 50 and a 90. Now, with the M8 gone, I'll shortly be down to something 21-25, the C-Sonnar, and a 90.

I went to the M9 for the resolution (bigger prints). Funny thing so far, in comparison, just how good the printed M8 files hold up in 11x14 to 16x20. Not enough experience to be sure, but it's interesting.

Not surprising, given how good the M8 files are. They are definitely good enough for me.

But the M9 for me isn't just about resolution. Beyond the high ISO advantage (seems like banding is less of an issue), I'd also like to go wider for landscape photography while walking through alpine backcountry. The choices for the M8 all have some trade-off somewhere (WATE: big and $$$; CV 15 not sharp enough; ZM 18: not sharp at the edges close up; ZM 21 C Biogon: not quite wide enough; Elmar 18: $$$). I am definitely aiming eventually to migrate to an Elmar 24/3.8 on a used M9.

otherwise you think it's worth it?

2 crons + 1 M8 = M9

for me i doubt it really would be worth it. i have 6 lenses now that i quite like but have been concentrating on using the 40 sonnar and the little cv 75. on the rd1 they fit for me best of the bunch.

for you? it's hard to say for another person. i know that when push comes to shove that i am very pleased with my rd1, both of them. having only 1 m9 might go against my neurotic way of thinking. i have always bought 2 of each camera that i have used. i prefer the same model so having an rd1 as a back up to the m9 would likely irritate me no end.
how much do you like the m8 now? is changing over to the m9 worth it? will the images really be that much better. i know many like the idea of full frame but having a crop factor has not slowed me down at all...in fact it lead to my discovering that i love the 60mm fov.

if i had the $$ and could buy an m9 without selling my current kit then i would do that in a heartbeat...but to change it all again? not this time for me.

makes PURRfect sense to me Joe....
the crop factor never bothered me with the RD1 and the Brief time I had the M8

I'm even considering trying the M8/8.2 again
after never really giving it a chance ..(.just a week  )
I quite liked alot of pixs I saw here on RFF w/ the M8

The M9 would be cool BUT Totally UNNECESSARY for Me

My only Fear its just another workflow
I don't mind developing Film & I am now waiting for TBarker's scanner to arrive
so if I do digital it has to be a Minimal Process otherwise forget it
