Missing parts on Canon IIF

I recently received my grandpas Canon IIF from my uncle. Even though my grandpa used it a lot, the lens and body are in great condition, and the shutter seemed to fire accurately even the slow speeds after a few times. The problem is that somewhere along the line, my uncle lost the bottom plate and spool. He insists that it has to be around somewhere because he wouldn't have thrown away something like that, but I'm not so sure that he'll be able to find them. What are the prospects of being able to find a bottom plate and spool for my IIF?

Chances are you will need to look for a "parts" or very-ugly camera to get the bottom plate. The spool should be easier, more compatibility across the bottom loaders..

A Canon bottom plate is, or recently was, on eBay recently.

DAG definitely would have a spool, at least a Leica one. Maybe a bottom plate.

Dag has them for certain - I got a new bottom plate to replace the engraved one that came with my much abused IVSb. http://www.dagcamera.com

Since the early Canons are classified as "Leica copies" , will a Leica takeup spool such as this one work in my IIF? I haven't seen Canon takeup spools on ebay.

My IIf is currently loaded. Once I get the roll finished off, I can check a Russian take-up spool in it. I suspect it will work.

The Leica M series spools will not work in it.

Yes, the Leica spools will work as will those from most Zorki's and Feds, but keep in mind the Canon spool is the best by far. It has a spring loaded pop-up knob that is much easier to grab and facilitates film changing quite a bit.

Thanks for the tips. My uncle said that he remembered a springy thing on the spool. After watching spools on eBay and some pics of the inside of a Leica on this site, I think I know what to look for.

Thanks for the link, I have never seen a FSU pop-up spool. I tried both a Zorki-1 and a Fed 3a spool in my Canon before responding to the thread and thought I was on safe ground. :bang:
