Missing Random Gallery

I'm gonna go ahead and flog this horse about once a week. It seems one or two people add to this thread then it disappears again!

I'm actually more interested in hearing my fellow members' thoughts first. It just seems like hardly anyone views this thread before it gets lost!

I miss it terribly, and used to love just pinging it to see what popped up. It would be cool if it could be made even larger. As Simon was saying, yeah, a lot of cool older stuff just isn't being unearthed anymore.

Since random images have been gone the whole Gallery seems much-less used.

It's as if the random images promoted the Gallery, and people went in and left comments and uploaded some of their own.

Now it's very quiet in there.

I guess the gearheads have outnumbered the photographers. :(
Not that there's anything wrong with that! ;)

The Random Gallery has been a powerfull lever bringing me back to the real thing. I miss it very much.

Cheers,

Random Gallery Coming Back

The problem with the Random Gallery is the load it puts on the server, slowing the entire site down. That was why it was taken off the home page.

The other server intensive search is the members online at any given time, something currently listed on both the home page and the forum main page.

Later today the random gallery will be back on the home page. To make it workable without slowing the site down a lot, the members online info will be removed from the home page, but still accessible on the forum main page.

We will try this scenario awhile and see how well it works in practice.

Stephen

I have an idea that may work better, but I don't know if it would be able to tie into the main page as it does now.

This site is getting large enough where the gallery is getting used more and more. There are two things that can be done about this. The first is that we can all pitch in for a new, faster server. Depending on what we have now, though, that could be quite expensive. The other option I've thought of is perhaps to put the gallery on a completely DIFFERENT server. This would prevent the taxing of this one, but it would also be an expense that would have to be covered. New domain name, the choosing of the gallery software, the installation of the software onto the server, and the management thereof would cost a decent amount. It would, however, allow us to post larger and better quality images.

It's just an idea, but I think it may work better than trying to make this server handle all the load.

Excellent news.

If donations are required to upgrade the server to cope, I'm certainly willing to help. The more photo-centric RFF is the more I like it.

This should be an image-driven site and the random gallery feature should be the center of the site.
I agree, but if you notice the tepid participation in the W/NW threads (as opposed or compared to the traffic see in, say, "M8 buyer beware" or "which lens to go with my work scarf?"), I don't know if that is such a big thing on the home page, as opposed to having it on the Gallery main page.

Just my twopence.

People like to argue and make themselves heard. I, personally, stay out of the "This is better than that" or "Beware of THIS".

I'd like to see this become more image-centric. I like photos. I like gear, too, but what's the point of having it if you never take photos with it?
