ML-Grip Question

From looking at the pictures, it appears that the inside vertical edge of the lip is not covered in velvet like the bottom is. I understand the bottom of the camera is protected by the velvet, but can anyone with experience in using this grip comment on what prevents scratching the lower bottom side circumference of the camera baseplate as it sits inside this lip of the grip? Thanks.
 
Correct. The inside vertical surface is not covered by velvet. But I don't see any scratching of my baseplate sides. The grip fit is pretty close - but not too close - and once tightened I can't sense any play or friction between the grip and baseplate to cause scratching.
 
I agree with all the statements. Great Grip, no signs of any marks left on the camera base plate even on a black paint M I had. I use one on my M3 and the MD Grip on my M8.
