This book shows step by step how to open the old Leica screw mount lenses and the tools you need for it. It is written both in Japanese and correct English, has great photos, and is available from Nobbysparrow on eBay. Recommended! O, yes, the book shows also how to reassemble the lenses. Not unimportant.

Owning no digital M, all I can do now is using it adapted on the X-E2.
Shot 5 minutes ago out of my kitchen window at f/6.3.

I'ts obviously very soft, especially in the edges/corners (can't imagine on FF...).
On the other hand, colour and distortion wise, it doesn't look that bad at all (it's a very dull day).
Anyway, not owning any other lenses this old, I'm not sure how it's supposed to perform.

1939 3.5/5cm uncoated Elmar. For practical purposes the 3.5cm uncoated Elmar performs almost as well when stopped down a bit. Unfortunately I don't have a digital image taken with my 3.5cm, but this is a pic of a gloss print I have on my wall. I just took it with a crappy digi I use for work. Not great, but it gives an idea of the sharpness of the lens stopped down. I took this about 10 years ago. The print is about 10x8.

The 3.5cm Elmar is actually a nice little lens.
