Anyone modified their screw mount case so that the strap lugs stick out of it? I would like to do this so that I could attach the camera strap to the cam from the outside of the case like you can with the Luigi and Zhou cases. This feels safes as id be relying on strap attached to metal lug rather than strap attached to leather case.

I did consider getting one of the Luigi/Zhou etc cases but that's just spending more money (also the Luigi cases are crazy expensive too) and more importantly, the Leica case feels pretty rigid and hard and like it would offer better protection in a drop than a soft supple leather case (Luigi/Zhou) would and that is more important to me.

I have one of these cases where the lugs stay inside the case like attached.

Going from memory here, but I don't think the body lugs on a screw-mount Leica are long enough to project beyond the leather of a stock case ?

I don't think the lugs would extend far enough either. Even if they did, you may not be that happy w/ the results. The Mr Zhou cases fit very snug, and my Leica hard cases used to be stretched out after all those years. The camera wobbled a bit in them when I was brave enough to risk it with the leather straps for a short trial. As for the case protecting the camera if it's dropped, the law of the universe is that it will assuredly land on it's top anyway :[

Buy a modern case. The old ever ready cases in good condition are hard to find as the one you depict appears to be. It would be a shame to damage one (and from a collectors viewpoint it would constitute destroying its authenticity). It may only be a bit of leather but it is a part of Leica history. And as others say in any event the lugs are not wide enough to work in the way you suggest.

I am not sure that the lugs on the camera would be strong enough to hold camera and case. That puts more strain on the lugs than they were designed for.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I use a peak design strap that has relatively long nylon thread loops so as long as they stick out a little or even just flush, i think it should be fine?

Yeah, i was thinking of finding me a slightly beat up version and maybe saving mine coz its in good shape...

I didn't consider this...
