In my real life I work in a highly geeky computer support department. Now of course, these sort of people tend to love gadgets and cool stuff. I think virtually everyone who saw my camera at the Christmas party ended up at some point uttering that universal geek phrase "Ooo, cute, well cool!!" in response to some random bit of the R-D1. Random cool bits included:
The "film winder"
The flip-out screen
The analog dials
The jog wheel ("Ooo, its just like an iPod")
The size of the lenses
The flash unit (actually an external finder on the shoe!)
The lack of noise
Rangefinder focussing (although few could get used to it although it was tricky conditions (ISO1600, 1/12th @f/1.4))
All resulted in much surfing of the Epson website and no doubt Robert White the morning after
Oh and they liked the shots as well...
When I bought this camera secondhand the previous owner mentioned that it was a bit of talking point at parties

Couldn't care less if my R-D1 is a talking point at parties or not, but actually one can even make pictures with it!

Indeed. Fortunately I seem to have a good one, even survived being bounced off the floor at a wedding, they are tougher than their reputation suggests...
