Not exactly a wonderful copy, but personally, I think that camera is one hell of a looker.

Thought you folks might be interested, if you hadn't seen already.

Hmm... It's a little too 'turn of the century sailboat' for me, but I always like looking at them. I have a Zorki 4 that has engraved shutter speeds and such, but the Zorki name on the front top plate is screened on, and it it's worn. I'm thinking of removing it completely, repainting it, engraving it - I don't know, something else. Just don't know where I'd start. I know engraving would make it look like a mess, because frankly, I don't know how. Maybe I could cut a mask of the original Zorki (Zopkuu) name, and airbrush it back on, or maybe I'll just paint the whole top plate black.... I'd never put the name Leica on it though. That's an insult. I'll let you all decide to whom. 🙂

Maybe it's just me, but I look at remakes like that and see hours and hours of labor and [often very impressive] skills that improve nada. I know there must be a market for 'em, but as said here many times, if those craftsmen would put the same amount of time and effort into actually refurbishing the camera to top working condition rather than making it shine, their profits would probably climb dramatically.

Parts Zorki.4s engraved are around and could be grabbed pretty reasonable. The top plate wouldn't be too hard to swap out and you could sell the parts shooter's engraved knobs to somebody here and recover some of your investment. {{Although... I'm not too good at setting aside a "spare-parts Zorki." I recently bagged a '59 Zorki.4 with the intent of holding it for spares. Once in hand, I found the only thing it needed was a little cleaning and lubing to loosen the film advance and it was good to go. Can't see parting out a camera that works fine. So much for spares. 😉 }}

Plan B ~ Zorki.5 & 6 have a little screwed on nameplate on the front. Something fabricated along that line might be fun/creative/unique.

I've never understood the wood finish body on these refinishes? Was there ever a Leica in wood finish? 🙂

Have you seen these? I believe both are masked and painted... Nice.

Or you can get "new" (but also printed not engraved) top covers for the Zorki 4 from Oleg for $4.40

Laika asks if there was ever a wood-finish Leica. I'm sure there is one someplace, but there have been plenty of them with such things as snakeskin, alligator, etc. And with this recent "a la carte" deal, you can just about custom-order them. Not long ago one guy had a picture on these forums of a new M-7 with gold plated metal and a bright blue cover. Didn't say what he paid for it, but it's for sure it wasn't a run of the mill price, which is pretty steep with Leicas to begin with.
