I agree. This is one of my favorite RFF threads that I've seen in a while. The lens obviously played a role, but it's the talent behind that the lens that makes the pictures worth looking at and thinking about.

More photos because so many wanted to see more. I will get back to replying to all the questions and comments in a bit.
Ridiculous Mess
This caught my attention immediately, why a mess this motor trike was. Someone was hauling something nice an messy in a construction area or something. Goes well with the eclectic background of old Chinese buildings though.
Quick Snooze
This guy catches a little shut eye as his girlfriend goes shopping. We all had that thought before right?
Guard?
A little cat put out in front of a table by the side of the street. A guard from thieves or a clever ploy to attract attention to the things for sale above. Either way the cat wanted attention, and it got some.
Big shoes little shoes
So do you need a size 1 or 1000? The stool is cleverly placed just in case you want to try. Actually these types of Chinese hand made cloth shoes are pretty comfortable but not something I would wear around as they tend to....stick out...
Dazed
Caught playing around and standing in a daze this little kid is about to get a scolding from his mother and he knows it.
Lazy Animal
This dog....this dog....every day for a week I walked by where this dog was sleeping, and every time he was there in the exact same position and the exact same look on his face. Once time I saw him awake and sitting there, still had the same look on his face though.
Bike and Bucket
One thing they use in Pingyao that we dont have in Chongqing is bikes, mainly because Pingyao is so flat and Chongqing is a mountain city. I miss riding bikes around though, a lot to see from the seat of a bike. Who ever owns this bike sure has a handy way of taking stuff with him, how is that for protection?
Tall?
Maybe he is too tall, maybe his tent is too short, whatever the cause he left something outside...Oh and yes, he is sleeping in there, I went and looked
Kids on parade
Kids on their way to school creates a mob in the streets and stops traffic both ways for a few minutes as they take the opportunity to pose for a few photos.
Anything for a yuan
Its amazing all the messages here in this picture. Icons of different worlds colliding together in one spot. Red stars and the hammer and sickle, an American and British flag, Che Guevara, Chinese propaganda posters, all a mere shadow of their true meaning. Really shows you how the world has changed and these symbols are all used for profit now.
Waiting with reflections
Every knock on a glass door where you could see in the place you wanted to go and just stood there watching for someone to come and open up for you? Is it not funny that this cat is kind of doing the same thing? We really are more alike then we care to say. This cat may not be able to knock on the glass but a few well places meows and the classic stare waiting for someone to open up...
Donkey
There were a lot of donkies around Pingyao, they were doing all the pulling work and what not, and on holidays they get dressed up a bit for presentation. The other thing is there in Pingyao they eat these things, I tired it, not too bad really, but not something I would add to my normal diet.
Sunset over Pingyao
They may not have much here that appeals to someone like me, but at leas the sky is relatively clear, unlike the sunless gray polluted skies of Chongqing.
Robert van der Hilst
I ran into this guy in Pingyao putting on a photo exhibition about Shannxi province house interiors. His photos had great depth with subtle colors and great care taken to composition. They really stood out compared to the normal blend of this and that you see when looking at exhibitions all day. He told me that he has been working in China for the last 3 years and will spend the next year here with a big focus on creating the question "what is that?" in his photos. Oh...he took one look at my camera and said "I dont like Leica's, your's is probably better"

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. The lens had its role yes, talent yes, scanning and all that, yes. It all comes together in a nice little package I think. Now if I could find a lab that would STOP SCRATCHING MY NEGATIVES :bang:
sorry about that, its just annoying

totifoto said:What scanner did you use for these fantastic photos?
Ah yes, the scanner, a powerful link in my work flow. The scanner used was a Fuji SP-1500. These scans are low rez (for 6 inch prints) scans that pop out as a 6 mb bmp. When I scan at full resolution the scanner will give out a 40 meg bmp that can really take a big enlargement. I routinely print 35mm negative photos 30x24 inches and 6x6 negatives 50x50 inches with scans made by this machine.
Oh, and just because at some point in time it happens:

Photographer on the road
There I go, off to the next photo op. Maybe I will see something interesting on the way and just for the heck of it jump off at the next station to go snap a few photos, you never know.
Taken by my girlfriend wangyi who pinched my camera to snap this photo on the train.

Excellent series
Excellent series
Wow excellent example of the photographer behind the lens...really enjoyable series and I could look at them again and again.
Cannot wait till Zeiss releases a digital RF.
Hope it will be cheaper than the Leica M8.

I love the photos and the look. I dare say I enjoy the color results over any other color negative results I've seen yet.
Let me get this straight, ziess 50mm planar, some fuji superia 200 and a Fuji SP-1500 scanner, plus your eye and it looks like that!? Amazing!

Thats right, that and the customary slight tweaking of brightness and contrast in photoshop that any experienced person who has ever used a photo scanner will tell you is necessary.

these are not planar photos - these are colins photos. probably one of best photographers not only on rff but in whole world. and im not joking. many famous photographers dont have photos on this level imho. i still remember his cv 35/2.5 series. every photo he create is great. congratulations!!!
Concur w/ nzeeman. All of these photos are terrific. But (I have to say) "Waiting with Reflections" blows me away: the color, the detail, the reflection of the cat's face in the glass. I think you hit a home run there!

My favorite from your series:

This is an excellent series of images! Looks to be a great little lens. Were the images mostly taken in Chengdu? I'm looking to visit Chengdu in autumn sometime. Looks like I'd better stock up on colour slide film for the trip.

No those photos were taken in Pingyao, which is near Beijing. Oh and as for chengdu....icky...I HATE CHENGDU.....my father lives there, its such a dull city....if you want to see some interesting things, drop me a line when you come, Chongqing is only a quick 3 hour train ride over, I will take you to see some neat areas in this city which are far more interesting. But ya know, if you are looking forward to it, then might be ok, just chengdu really is not my cup of tea, or as they say here in Chongqing..."chengdu copies everything chongqing does then claims it as their own and they all talk like they are gay" (no offense to gays, its a cultural/dialect thing that bugs chinese people about chengdu)

Hey, great photos.
Can you tell me a bit about the Fuji SP-1500 scanner? I've never heard of it before. For the life of me, I can't get scans that look as good as that from negatives with my Nikon 8000ED.

Hey, it seems to me that your Planar is much better than mine, as mine never takes such great photos
Just kidding.
I'm amazed and stunned by your images. I enjoyed this trip to China. Beyond photographic skills you have a fantastic sensivity to your subjects that makes your photos different.
You should make a gallery or slideshow of these pictures somewhere on the web to make it more comfortable to go through.
You will be famous. Keep up the good work.

I'm really impressed. Mostly by your talent (amazing shots, very consistent, with a real personality) but by the lens too. What a sharpness and lovely colors! (but great bokeh too... Zeiss touch). I love Zeiss lenses more and more. I think this Planar would be a great add to my C-Sonnar 50 and Biogon 21/4.5 (other amazing lenses too).
I hate you for aggraving my GAS!!!! :bang:
