Closest to my Contax II is my non metering Minolta SRs and SR7v cousin with built in meter - essentially an SRT with lower toplate .
Serviced , new seals with 50 f 1.7 Rokkor [ or compact 45 f 2 ] it's a delight .

I second what others have said, the OM1 and the MX are wonderfully built, small and beautiful mechanical cameras that just shoot and shoot.
I own Leicas and a Pentax MX, and will not stop using any of them.
About the 50mm f1.4 lenses, I still haven't tried the Zuiko, but can assure you that the Pentax alternatives are superb and also cheaper: Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 and the Pentax-M SMC 50mm f1.4.
My advice: get any of these and you won't regret!

Another vote for OM1/2. I used them for many years in combination with Leica M's and they complimented each other better than any other SLR that I have used, same with the OM3 and 4Ti. Must say the Zuiko lenses are among the best I've ever used, a much under rated system in my opinion as only Leica and Zeiss come close. The Nikon F3 wasn't bad either.

Really? I got my R4 and 50 Cron for less than $500 total a year ago. Bodies are now around $100-$150, R7 bodies are in the $300 range, and lenses still around $350-$450.

How cheap does one want to go for a "Leica-like" camera that has quality and lenses that are real Leica rather than something else?:angel:

Now, granted, everyone has their favorite systems, etc. I prefer Nikons second only to the Leicas I use. So, why not just use what you love and the heck with everything else?
 
Years ago I had an extensive Leica outfit with R bodies. We can agree to disagree but I never thought the lenses were any better than my Nikon lenses. The "signature" did more closely resemble my M lenses when using Kodachrome but not enough to matter.

Most of the lenses were made by Sigma or Minolta. Selections are limited and the really good ones go for a lot more than a few hundred dollars.

Still have my SL2 and a couple of lenses but never use it except to use it. Listed in the classified if you want a nice outfit.
 
I'm with Dee on this one - I recently acquired a MInolta SR-1 (model V) and it's an absolute delight. It's reasonably compact, feels beautifully built and the controls all fall to hand just so. There's no meter so the viewfinder is clean and bright with nothing between you and the subject other than a circular microprism focussing screen. Of all the SLRs I've used over the years, this is the one that seems, in my opinion, like an extension of using my Barnack Leicas.
 
I've never owned an FE, but I was very happy w/ the build quality of my Nikkormat FT2, F4s, and of course a Leicaflex SL (which will seem most like a Leica because it is one). They're all big, heavy cameras though, which was always my gripe about the Leica M cameras too. Not that they're THAT big, but they're really heavy. It's the price you pay for great materials and build quality.
 
On my shelf right now, it is the Pentax H2. The pre-Spotmatics are really small and nice, especially with their period lenses. Nothing to clutter up the viewfinder as they don't have a meter. They go for almost nothing these days (bought a black H2 for $45, including shipping).

Well, stating that Sigma lenses are not much different than Nikon lenses isn't exactly an endorsement. 😱

I myself never use Nikon except when I use it. 😀

I've picked up a couple Miranda Sensorex in the last few weeks. Nice cameras -- definitely NOT Leica-like, but fun to use. The front-mounted release is comfortable and the 50mm 1.4 lens I've got is quite good. Plus, the Sensorex looks very '70s RETRO.
