Museum watch: check you bags because of the torn Picasso

I'm waiting for someone to figure out how to build inch-thick lenses that don't change size when you focus them. Then we can all buy such digitally controlled thin lenses and slap them on our skinny cellphone-sized camera bodies, minimizing both the size of camera bags and the reasons to carry one.

Probably a pipedream, but a nice one.

Yep, that will be it, beardies get a rough deal now, cover that photo down to your nose with a peice of card and see why:D

Once again we all have new rules to follow because of a single incident. I also see gender bias. Too bad, I hate to check valuable equipment and I hate to go out without it. I see it as a continued erosion of our right to conduct ourselves as we want, as long as we don't bother others. I'm sure sometime, somewhere a tourist will scratch some beautiful wood museum floor and we'll all be forced to go around shoe-less ala TSA.

I'm just dreading the day when artwork will be displayed behind inch-thick bulletproof glass (and you KNOW that day is coming!). In the meantime, I've no problem abiding by some inconveniences to prolong that dreaded day.

I travel with a Lowepro stealth reporter 100 aw, that is easy to carry by hand, over the shoulder, etc. I have used this for years. I have lens pouches that attach to it if there is the need. I use it when traveling to cities as well as in my backpack when I am hiking, climbing, or canoeing. But, once in a city, I tend to grab a body with a lens, and possibly one other lens. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have no choice but to take it with you.

I understand your situation, frustrating I am sure being caught with all of your equipment. Did they offer secure storage? I would hate to hand someone 15-30k in glass and bodies without assurances of its security. A rather tempting target for a thief. Even if it's insured, it does you no good to be somewhere you wish to shoot, if your camera is stolen.
