I moved. Twice, in fact, since the 1985 photo was taken.

As photographers, we often forget or simply cannot be in the pictures we take. Always being "the one behind the camera." A shame really, as it would be a great document to our own history.

Very true. As I have been working on scanning my old negatives, I have come to the realization that if it were not for these occasional self-portraits in the mirror, my future grandchildren would never know what I looked like. As it is, my two sons (ages 19 and 15) grew up thinking I always had a camera in front of my face.

In the first shot, you're almost clenching the camera and lens. In the second, it's more of a supportive caress.

I bought my two M6 when they first came out, maybe 1985. They look as new and the factory plastic is on the bottom.

Since the newer ones will not take the Leica reloadable cassettes, these will be the last.

because we are on the second page i quoted so the pictures showed up..

i have to admit when i saw the title i thought this might be a bit lame, i have cameras that are still going from that age, and i have cameras that are 120 years old that still work as nice as when they were made

then i saw the pictures and thought ,hey that aint half bad, similar pictures from different times, dazegoneby is right, your grip is more relaxed now, time does go by quicker when your older (experienced faster) but pictures like this aint half bad...and if a compliment is ok then he has kept himself in good working order too as well as the camera eh

Thank you, Andrew. I have tried to avoid decrepitude as best I can. I hadn't actually noticed, but I think the looser grip can be attributed to both experience and arthritis.

Actually, my 1965 M3 (which I have owned since 1978) also works quite nicely, but I happened upon the 1985 photo while scanning negatives and realized the similarity to the one I took last week.

Time certainly does fly when you're having fun. Photography is one endeavor that allows us to freeze brief moments of it.

Not too many. In fact, I still have the leather Leica strap that's in the 1985 photo, and it's in pretty good shape.

Actually, but for these last five years, I have carried and used that M6 quite a bit. It's a testament to Leica that it still looks as good as it does.

I'll have to try to ding it up a bit so I don't look like such a poser. 😛
