My "M" Conundrum

I keep chanting that same old mantra:
"I do not need a Leica M3 or M6"
"I do not need a Leica M3 or M6"
"I do not need a Leica M3 or M6"

But ya know.. it just doesn't seem to be working. I mean, I should be satisfied with my Bessa R3A with it being an M mount camera right? It's so much fun shooting with it; yet there is the siren, calling out to me, and begging me to venture forth and rescue her .....

Is there any way I can avoid being yanked into that comforting void?

If you are happy with your Bessa R3A, you should just get a back-up body that will take screw-mount lenses. The lens forms the image, the camera is just a light-tight box to hold the film flat and the lens out in front of it. 🙂

This is true... and yes.. I'm still considering a screw mount... grrrrrrr 😀

The problem continues: If you get a M6 the sirens will tell you to add the M3 and vice versa. The solution: get a MP which combines the best of M3 and M6.

Your not alone. I have an R3a and love it, but I've been watching out for a good M3.

I think they would work perfectly side by side, but what do I know. I'm still in the process of talking myself into it so I'll buy any excuse right now 🙂

i know of someone who is going to put a nib m5 up for auction in about a week, at you know where.
i haven't seen the camera but it sure sounds like an opportunity for someone in the market for one.

How about a Hexar RF? Though fully electric, it combines all the goodies of the others, it just doesn't say 'Leica' on it.

Seriously, I am going to Kenia next month. I will take the Hexar and the Bessa T, both metered, because of speed of work in certain situations.
Ofcourse I will bring the separate meter.

And my Minolta XD for the 300 (plus x2) telephoto.

I may even sell the M2 afterwards if I am completely satisfied. But that is a really big step. Like selling a crown jewel.

Then again, there is life after Leica.

Um... See, this is a slippery slope. You ARE aware that the best "standard lens" for the M's is >$2,000, right? Lust? Hmmm?
And just wait. You get an M, and what fits on it? Of course! The Noctilux.

It's a never ending battle. I've just decided to sit back and take pictures.

*AFTER* buying an MP, a Noctilux, a 35mm Summilux ASPH, a 90mm AA, a 135 f/2.8...
(and quietly, shamefully looking for a 28mm or 25mm lens for those times when 35mm just ain't wide enough)

You know there is no such thing as "too many" cameras, unless you do not have the space to store them.

Another thing to consider....while the Bessa's are fine cameras, as are the Canons and Konica's, and all, it is the Leica brand that has the ability to appreciate in value over the years. Alll the screw-thread Leicas and the early M Leicas (M2, M3) all now sell used for more than they sold for new. Thus, if you had purchased a new M3 and used it all these years and now turned around and sold it, you could make a profit from what you initially purchased if for. You surely can't beat a deal like that. It is unclear if M6's and M7's will maintain this appreciation trend, as they are still too new. Initially any Leica goes through a period of depreciation, bottoms and then starts climbing. It may take a decade more for an M6 to sell for more than it did new, but it probably will. Other cameras also exhibit this value trend, but it really needs to be a highly robust extremely well made camera to last for decades and decades.
