My M is on the way... Need a lens.

Tim:

Spend the extra money and get the 50 Summicron. You spent the money on the M6 now do it justice and put some good galss on it. This is where you're really going to see results!!

they are all good glass!

i tell ya, sean reid's site is worth the price of admission...

he did a test of leica/cv and zeiss 50mm lenses and there wasn't enough of a difference to justify all the worry we put into what we shoot with.

joe,

I agree with you, I have a few CV lenses myself and I'm very happy, even ordered the R3M from Stephen on Friday. However, if Tim was willing to spend the extra money for the body which as I'm sure you'll agree is nothing more than a light tight box, then he should do the same for the glass, after all there's an awful lot of Zeiss glass in your avatar and not much else that I can see 😉

Leica is really best known for their optics, not their cameras, except on this forum. The trendy thing here is to get the best M camera one can afford and slap on a cheap lens. Personally I would recommend the latest 50mm Elmar, but what do I know?

I think its partially due to the fact that there are a lot of really high quality (and affordable) lenses nowadays. Couple that with the fact that it seems that 50's are usually a good lens no matter who makes and there a butt load of choices, especially at 2.0.

When I decide to buy a 35mm (presumably my 2nd lens), it will be the Leica. But the 50 might not be.

If funds are not an issue, buy a Leica 50cron and you won't second guess yourself later. Depending on version (5 of them) and condition, you can spend as little as $250 to $850.

As others have suggested, the m-hexanon 50, the planar 50, CV 50/1.5 50/2.5, not to mention all the canon LTMs 50/1.4 50/1.5 are all great possibilities.

Your best chance for a deal is to wait for RFF or photo.net classifieds (usually much cheaper than Ebay offerings). But like I said, if funds are not an issue, save yourself any potential handwringing by buying a 50/cron, it is a great lens 🙂 good luck

I think I am going to wait it out a bit and see something turns up that I like. If I find a Hexanon 50 for a good price, then great. If I find a nice newer Summicron 50 for a good price, then great, etc.

Thanks for all the great advice and tips on where to look!
