Well folks, I finally was able to join your ranks yesterday
When I got my Canon P in the mail! A few days ago, I received
the Canon 35mm f2.8 ltm lens I had purchased. It's the later silver/black
version. Both Ebay grabs... This is my second rangefinder/film camera
the first one being an Argus C44 (Rest in peace). I think my next
purchase (in camera gear) will be a sharp/contrasty 50mm... Any recommendations?

I know I've got a long way to go as far as getting exposures right
and framing things in an interesting way, but I must admit, I'm having
fun 😀

Here are two from the first roll....

Since you already have the "P"opulaire and the 35mm, why not go for the trifecta? 50mm f1.8 (or 1.4 if you have a little extra $$$) and the 100mm.

I have the 50/1.8, (and 135/3.5) now, and find it a very capable lens; a little more contrasty than the earlier Serenar versions. Looking to add a late-model 35mm soon.

I was thinking about that until I saw the size of the 100mm.
The only form of transportation I have is an 01 KTM 640 Enduro
( ofwhich I'm sure you guys are going to get an eyeful 😀 )
and therefore space is at a HIGH premium... That and I don't know
that I'd truly get my dollar's worth from that lens considering my
extremely limited budget (especially now 🙄 )
Would you recommend the canon over a modern CV?

First, congrats! Then, if you have not done so, read Dante Stella on Canon RF lenses, and look at his exemplary images with them. The 50 1.8 is small compared to the (progressively bigger) 1.4, 1.2, .95 (not sure about the 1.5, a lens I would like to own).

And it's possible to get the 1.8 (or the 1.4) for good $$. If a lens is for sale with haze, it may clean right up (my 50 1.8 did), but best to determine that before plunking down the $$. My P + hazy 50/1.8 cost $150, with $40 for cleaning up the light haze.

The most desired 100 is the fast 100/2, but the original 100 3.5 is a fantastic lens, and can be gotten for ~$200. I have the earliest one in fine shape. It's a favorite. If you look at my recent shots of the Dalai Lama in the gallery, those are all the 100 Serenar on a GXR shot at 3200 wide open, so effectively 150mm.

Modern CVs will be sharper across the frame, provide greater contrast, etc. If the prices are comparable, and you like modern contrast/sharpness, that's the rationale for getting the modern LTM lenses. But there's nothing like the early Serenar 100/3.5.

If you become interested in an early (chrome Serenar) 135/4 + VF + case, contact me. I use a later black 135/3.5, but found the pristine 135/4 for an absurdly low price. (It willl appear in the classifieds soon with other gear to help finance the perfect Nikon S2/50 1.4/135 3.5 I just got....)

I have the 100/3.5 and it's one of my favorite LTM lenses. It's so &@%!ing small it's almost too easy to carry around with you all the time. Quite sharp, great bokeh wide open, incredibly light, and somewhat classical color rendition depending on what film you're using (they're uncoated, or at least mine is). The only thing I'd wish is for a faster focusing helicoid. It's a bit long-throw, but that's fine when I take it out on my IIc+ with the matching Canon 100 auxiliary finder -- an exercise in slowing down and patience, haha.

Hey, a fellow rider and Canon P user 🙂

I recommend a 50/1.8 and 100/3.5. Not expensive, excellent lenses, and will fit your tank bag easily. Here's for size of the small 100:

Yea! Thanks ferider! Larger photos are up!

Is it simply my inexperience or is it much more
difficult to get a pleasing rendition in artificial light??

I am using a recently acquired metrastar light meter. It's in perfect condition aside
of some fogging/haze of the meter window. I'm about to tear into it and
clean it up. I'll let yall know how badly I screw it up!😎

That swamp photo is great, Travis. 1/2 sec is impressive, too 🙂

I try to stay away from color film indoors ....

As a possible alternative to the Canon 100 (I have nothing against it, just offering another option), I've been using a Leitz Elmar 90 f/4 on my recently-acquired P and I've been really happy with the results. I've had no trouble whatsoever using the 100 framelines for the 90.

It works for me O2PILOT, Don't own the 100 but the 135 I do have is just too ungainly. Mostly it stays home and the 90/4 gets the nod. For a 50 the Canon50/1.5 is one I'd like to have but the J-3 or J-8 the CZJ 50/1,5 or the Nikkor 50/2 are also good choices. You may also want to take a peek through a 35mm or 28mm as they are small and very affordable. My point is there are great lenses out there, at great prices but take your time as there is always another sale. Enjoy! After all that's the important thing.

For a sharp, contrasty 50, I'd say try the Canon 1.8, or a Jupiter 8 if you don't want to spend a lot. People talking about longer lenses too, so I'll comment that the Elmar 90 did not impress me as very sharp or contrasty. A Canon 85mm or any other is better.

My experience with the Elmar 90 f/4 has not been the same as yours. I have only used it with a lens hood, which I think is pretty much mandatory. Here's a sample (straight off the scanner, no post-processing):

FWIW, the rest of my kit for the P is a 35mm Jupiter-12, 50mm Jupiter-8, and 135 f/3.5 Nikkor Q.C.
