Hi Frank,
I hope your trip is continuing to go well. I had a look at your blog last night and it looks like you're continuing to run into lots of interesting characters and some beautiful scenery.
Regarding unfocused images, I can't say "balance" or "tension" cause interest as I've never thought about it in those terms. I tend not to think about the theoretical 'rules' of photographic composition. I'm more in the school of 'gut reaction' to the scene in my viewfinder. When viewing my photographs after-the-fact I can maybe say it does or doesn't follow any number of composition 'rules'. But when I'm out in the world with the camera up to my eye, I don't think of things such as "balance", rule-of-thirds, etc..
As I suspect is true for most photographers, judging an image's success happens during the editing process. At least that's true for me. Even in that editing process, I'm not thinking of the canon of photographic arts composition rules. Instead, I look for images that grab my gut for what I suspect are complex reasons uniquely tied to the way I've experienced life. Now I've got a couple of new experiences (your thoughtful comments) that might influence my next editing session! 🙂
Thanks so much, Frank, for taking the time to look at my photography. Please come back to "My Photo Diary" from time to time and give me your thoughts.
Have a great second half of your around-the-country trip!
