My Photo Diary

Hi Frank,
I hope your trip is continuing to go well. I had a look at your blog last night and it looks like you're continuing to run into lots of interesting characters and some beautiful scenery.

Regarding unfocused images, I can't say "balance" or "tension" cause interest as I've never thought about it in those terms. I tend not to think about the theoretical 'rules' of photographic composition. I'm more in the school of 'gut reaction' to the scene in my viewfinder. When viewing my photographs after-the-fact I can maybe say it does or doesn't follow any number of composition 'rules'. But when I'm out in the world with the camera up to my eye, I don't think of things such as "balance", rule-of-thirds, etc..

As I suspect is true for most photographers, judging an image's success happens during the editing process. At least that's true for me. Even in that editing process, I'm not thinking of the canon of photographic arts composition rules. Instead, I look for images that grab my gut for what I suspect are complex reasons uniquely tied to the way I've experienced life. Now I've got a couple of new experiences (your thoughtful comments) that might influence my next editing session! 🙂

Thanks so much, Frank, for taking the time to look at my photography. Please come back to "My Photo Diary" from time to time and give me your thoughts.

Have a great second half of your around-the-country trip!

_ Jamie

These were all made with the little Nikon 1 V3 camera and the 1 Nikkor 18.5mm f/1.8 lens (50mm equiv.).

i cannot believe that i have never noticed this thread before now!

what a facinating journey...i love that it's not a project but a posting of random images as they were taken...it feels so very real and alive!
and seeing the subtle differences in images depending on what gear was used...first impressions tell me that i really like the nikkor 35 on the fuji and the ricoh gr best! though the nikon v is good too...
i look forward to many more visits to this thread!!

Thanks a lot Joe. I very much appreciate it when someone gives me detailed feedback on this stuff. Cheers... and best wishes for an early Spring up north there. 🙂

Life from above

Life from above

I'm building a series of photo images of scenes out of my commuter train window; views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Here are a few from my first efforts.

I really like these Jamie. Agree with Joe. You are on to something for sure.

Thank you for the nice thought, Allen. Much appreciated. I feel bad that I let this little thread sit idle for months sometimes. I'm always producing something or another, photo-wise, but I forget about this thread too often. Anyway, thanks again. I'll post more of these "Life from above" images tomorrow.

Jamie, I just found this thread DOH and I am glad I did. The stinky feet shot pg 2 IIRC is just killer as are so many more. Great to see the work in one place.

These are very good, Jamie. Book material if you ask me.

Roland.

Roland, thanks for the nice comment. Actually, I've been thinking of self-published books generally lately. Using something like Blurb, I might start putting together thematic books for myself, just so that I might better understand my photographic 'intent'. I'm thinking that putting together sets of images in book form might force me to be more considerate of image quality, image-to-image relationships, story-telling potential, etc.. Your comment helps push me forward... thanks a lot.
