I just now purchased a used Mamiya 645J off of eBay, complete with lens and finder. It was a good deal (I think) as I usually see these go for maybe $50-$100 more than I paid, still... I don't really need anymore cameras, and it is more than I usually allow myself to spend. However, I've just been really jonesing for a really nice medium format camera. My Zeiss folder is nice, but it has its limitations, especially since it is a scale focus.

Be sure she informs us of the date and locations of the wake, funeral, and sale of all your camera items. Especially the later. :D :D :D

Hope you like the camera when it arrives. Be sure to get a good portrait of her, blow it up to about 11x14, frame and hang it in a conspicuos place for her to admire. Of course, like most wives, she will complain about the cost of the photo and frame. :D

Dont tell her.....

"No honey, this isn't a new used camera, I've had it since before we were married. Don't you remember?"

"A new used camera? Nah, a guy at the office wanted me to test if for the next couple of years."

"I know, I know. I promise i'll join a twelve step program tomorrow."

"Did I complain when you bought that last new dress? It wasn't even used like my camera!"

Let's hear some more good excuses. I'm probably going to need a good one too. I just bought a Carl Ziess 135 f/4 for the Kiev.

There are worse things a wife can do than to kill you ...
You should follow oftheherd´s advice. If that doesn´t work, good luck!

or.......

"Oh, this old thing? I'ts barely working. Someone I know was selling it for $20 just to get rid of it"

There are three possibilities. The first is that you are a complete pillock. The second is that you're married to the wrong woman. And the third is that you've bought into a myth about personal relationships, namely, the War Of The Sexes, where neither side ever makes allowances for the other's shortcomings. I sincerely hope it's the third.

If you lie to your wife about what you've bought (or she lies to you), because you can't afford it, you're heading for bankruptcy or divorce or both.

Except for the smallest purchases (under, say, $100), or purchases where we KNOW we're going to agree, we discuss it first: whether we can afford it, whether we need it, whether we even really want it.

Twenty-six years last June says we're doing something right...

That's a bit too serious dont you think?

Roger, I agree. If I were going to be dishonest with my wife, it surely wouldn't be over something as trivial as buying cameras. The trust factor is too important.

hm, under $100 you say? this was just under $100, even including shipping. does that mean I'm in the clear?

I agree with Roger's statement too, but I dont think the originator was really being that serious about his statement. Who knows.........

No, I really don't.

Either it's promoting empty stereotypes, or it's a symptom of a deep malaise in a marriage.

Which would you prefer?

Cheers,

R.

Or maybe that's just how they roll over there. Getting "caught" might be nearly as exciting as the "punishment". <g>

There are many kinds of people in this world, far too many for me to judge, but suit yourself.

Dear Ray,

Very true. But I remember two sayings I learned from my my dear late mother. She died in 1973; was something of a cynic; and was given to saying things for effect (very like my deal late mother-in-law):

"The most important thing in life is sincerity. Once you can fake that, you can fake anything."

"When you lie to someone, look 'em straight in the eye. It confuses them."

Cheers,

R.
