the first time I went to Myanmar SIM cards for a telephone were 1,500 USD, the prices have gone down over the years.....currently, they are 150.00 USD which is a little strange considering that in Thailand they are 1.00 USD, Laos 3.00 USD and in Cambodia 4.00 USD.....regardless, I was surprised on this trip to have seen so many people with cell phones
and the fact that they had free Wi-Fi at Shwedagon Pagoda was a little strange....

I am so happy that I have met this woman and I became friends with her son, I can't wait to go back and see them again....

cheers, michael

Awesome work!

We were there exactly one year ago, one of our best adventures ever!

Michael, your ability to elicit smiles from your subjects is worth celebrating. I cannot recall a set of travel photos from Asia, Africa, South America or anywhere that contains so many smiles. That must say something about you. :)

Hey, thanks a lot for that nice compliment...... I think it helps that I can speak some Burmese, Shan and a little bit of some other local languages ( I also know some slang too)..... I also try to make my subjects feel at ease and comfortable around me.....sometimes I will talk for a long time with them before I even pick up my camera to photograph them.......and then other times it is different.......every situation is different, but I think most Burmese are surprised when they hear me speak to them in their language and joke with them......

Love the series of arm and then arm-person

Hey thanks a lot for that compliment......I took that photo at the Yangon train station, it is one of my favorite places to photograph......you can meet and see people from all over the country there.....

I like the sign in the photo where you can see the woman that says "Warmly Welcome and Take Care of Tourists"...... it's such an interesting country to travel in....

anyways, thanks again.....cheers, michael

This photo is of me and my best Burmese friend.....he is/was a photographer when I met him 6 years ago, he used to work at Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.....We used to communicate regularly by email until I lost contact with him about 2 years ago...... when I went looking for him last year, I learned that he was in Insein Prison (one of the worst prisons in the world)..... It broke my heart when I found out this awful news..... He left (deserted) his position in the army because he refused to fight (kill) his own countrymen....when I met him, he was living a "secret life" working as a photographer.....well, he ended up spending close to 2 years in prison and as soon as I found out he was free, I went to go visit him.....ironically, the person who took this photo was a random western stranger on the street with a Leica M-E.... I saw this guy early in the morning with a Leica on the streets of Yangon and started talking to him.... I explained to him that I was about to meet my friend who just got out of jail in 20 minutes on this street....well, when my friend showed up, I was extremely happy to see him, and I handed my camera to the western guy and he shot a couple of photos of me and my friend.....
