Need advice from the Canadians

We'll be vacationing with the kids at the end of the summer in Northern Vermont, then we'll visit across the border in Montreal for the (US) Labor Day Weekend. I think that will be the first weekend in September.

Anything going on in Montreal that weekend?
Any must see places (for touring and photos)?
This will be my first time in Montreal (or Canada for that matter).

Thanks.

I used to have loads of information on Montreal, made a half dozen or so trips there as a younger man. It is a wonderfully busy cosmopolitan city. Plenty of museums, festivals.... I am sure you will find a lot to do. I hesitate to offer advise as you will be with your children, and I wouldn't do some of the things I did in Montreal dragging my son with me. 😉

I will be in heaven though the first time he wants to make the trip to Montreal to the Jazz Festival.

I live in Ottawa, which is 1.5 hours from Montreal by car:

Things I'd recommend:
- Going to Old Montreal and walking around - cobblestone streets and old buildings, get enough 'fin de monde' beer and an old ranfinder with HP5 in you and you'll think you're in Europe
- Museum of Fine Arts - a great gallery and there's always special exhibition on
- Walking around Downtown (Peel Street, St. Catherine, St. Denis) and having montreal style bagels and a coffee at an outdoor cafe - lots of city life there
- There's a Biodome (plants and some animals) that's apparently good, but I've never been myself
- Walking around Mount Royal, not touristy as such, but nice picnic grounds and view of the city from up high.

Cheers,
-Amit

HP5 it will be then! Food, beer, and places to go. Perfect.

Keep 'em coming, guys. 😉

They can stay with their mother for a couple of hours. 🙂

Hi Ray,

Have a look at montreal.com, they usually have a list of all the festivals that take place during the summer months. There also may be some other information that may or may not come in handy, it's worth a look.

Cheers,

Besides the old city area there is a street (runs N/S) on the near east side just above downtown (damn - wish I had a map here! :bang: ) which has block after block of restaurants of all kinds with outdoor dining (in the nice weather). It's actually very well-known so a good tourist brocuhure of website will mention it.

For exercise, and a great view of the downtown and old city take the hike up Mount Royal (including walking the streets of McGill Univ. just below it).

To see a beautiful old neighborhood (or neighbourhood, if you will) take a trek through Westmount. Once the "seat of power" for the largely departed Anglos - there are some beautiful old Tudor and similar-styled mansions etc..

Expo park has seen better days - but it's a good excuse to ride the Metro and the trip up the tower affords a great view from the east looking westward to the downtown etc.

Oh - also, although it's seen better days - you have to go to Bloom's (?) for a real honest to goodness Montreal Smoked Meat sandwhich (similar to but different from corned beef or pastrami - it is an institution)!

RFF member Marc Jutras, now HE could show you a few interesting sights in Montreal, but he's not been around lately.

I wouldn't mind tagging along to one of Marc's underground club shoots. 😉
Kids will be asleep then.
