Need help for an EBay transaction (listing removed, seller excluded, already paid)

Can you not put the German text through an online translation site and get French?

The fact I am somewhat reluctant to open a EBay case is because every single time I try to do it from the website of EBay France, I was directed to EBay Germany for some reason. The response I just got from EBay is also in German, whilst I've never asked for that language, and my initial request was sent in French from EBay France. They managed to understand it and replied me politely in German...

The seller was registered in Finland but he wrote the description in German. Perhaps that's why. In Europe, EBay translates automatically all listings to your language, to encourage you to buy from other countries. But once you get into trouble with a foreign seller that uses another language, you are condamned to use the seller's language, and EBay won't help you translate anything anymore. It is fortunate that I know some German, but if it was Bulgarian, I would definitely want to hang myself.

I will call both EBay and PayPal tomorrow.

@seany65, why would you want to return them if they arrived in the end? I suppose for a £8 lens, the condition is not important? I ordered the camera 3 days ago. Are you suggesting I should wait for one week or two to see if the camera actually comes? I tried to contact the seller via his PayPal address but got no response, and I don't think I can count on it.

@pagpow, yes, Google translation, that's what I did to understand the response from EBay I received in German. But when you go to resolution center, you have to write down things in German, which is more difficult.

@Spider67, I will remember it 🙂 I did learn to read some cyrillic letters last time I was in Sofia, but most of time I couldn't understand anything. Even the alcohol didn't help.

If it looks like a really good bargain from a seller with no feedback, then you move on and forget about it😉. Sorry for your troubles but it should be alright in the end, you will get you money back ... unless you paid "as a gift", then you might be in trouble.

This might be good to get a rough understanding of a text in foreign language. I would not want to rely on such an translation when it's about monetary consequences e.g. I don't get a refund because I made a mistake in the the refund process because of a sloppy translation.

When PayPal split from eBay they adopted their own resolution process
Here in the us I've found PayPal more helpful ,
eBay has overseas contact centers that seem to be very nice but can only read off prepared list for you
PayPal are the money transfer unit and I've always reached someone in the us , would call them to at least determine what the process is , they do in the end issue the refund

File a case with eBay so they know the problem

@enasniearth: what you said is very true, except I just learnt there was no need to file a case with EBay under similar circumstances.

This morning I opened a case with EBay Germany, since I was forced to use German for the procedure. I had tried to contact EBay France to see if they would allow me use either French or English, but I was unable to contact them at all, because the item number was already invalid in their system (complete listing). Only in EBay Germany I could open the case. It took me quite a while to get the message translated in a readable way in German. According to the procedure, the seller has 10 days to reply to my message.

I tried to speak with somebody on the phone, but couldn't find any phone number in EBay. Then I called PayPal.

It was a real person who answered me, and I didn't even have to wait! I told her the whole story and that I wanted my money back. She closed immediately the EBay case I had opened earlier, opened a PayPal dispute, and escalated it to a claim. She said now the account of the seller was frozen and the seller had 10 days to provide the tracking number and the proof of delivery, failing which PayPal would close the claim in my favour. She also said I was right to call PayPal without waiting the EBay process to be over, that under similar circumstances, it was not only allowed but also the right thing to do. In the end, she assured me I would get my money back.
