New 50mm f1.1

Considering the f1.1 A7tisans lens has been out for less than a year, there is a disproportionate amount second hand. I feel from the postings that people think it is going to be as good as ... but cost much less. I would prefer a lens with better IM than the VC f1.1. Don't get me wrong, 7Artisans producing M mount lens, excellent. It is just the extreme hype around them which I am suspect of. In Wales, but looks like I am digging my way out to England 😉. A decent review of the f1.1 7A and VC at wider apertures (1.1 -f4) on film would be most

Huss,

I think he's most likely referring to UK dealers - where over the past few months there have been quite a few put up for sale. For instance, Ffordes currently have three for sale:

Incidentally, I own one and really like it - and am tempted to get a second (like you). Just can't make up my mind whether to do it, or go for something like the new Voigtlander 50 1.2 Nokton Asph!

John

Yep ffordes. 3 on sale. VC is much more interesting.

So one shop has 3 for sale, which means a flood?

While ebay UK and ebay USA have zero?

Ok then.

Interestingly, ffordes has 4 used Leica 28 2.8 Asph lenses for sale.
3 used Leica 135mm f4..

I guess if you decide that you are seeing something, then you are seeing something.

There are a few 7artisans f1.1 on the second hand market, maybe not as good a people think. For some reason people on rff think cheap means good. I think cheap means... Cheap. After having a great handling, close focusing Tamron 135mm f2.5 with poor Image quality, I now require the full set, E.g. Good Image quality.

this lens is a Sonnar design has its characters when use wide open, most time I use it at 1.1 that's why I buy f1.1 lens. People complain "soft" most time it is out of focus point. cheap can be mean good.

Is there anyone who has both Canon 50mm F1.4 and 7artisans?
I am choosing between those two lenses.
I have read a lot about canon and its seems like this lens is really nice performer for its age and price. Even open wide its OK.

I dont think i will shoot F1.1 because i dont realy like softness and boke on 7artisans. But i like examples shot on F2 by Hamish on 35mmc.

But i definitely need a good performance in low light sometimes.

So my main question - who is sharper on 1.4-1.7?

I have these two lenses, and I find them both to be good 50mm lenses overall. The 50/1.4 is tiny in comparison with the 50/1.1. This is a major advantage, in my opinion.

Just from my feeling about these two lenses, I would say that the 7A is better corrected across the entire frame while the Canon is sharp in the center and slightly less sharp in the corners. Most if not all vintage lenses are sharp mostly in the center. Sharper is not necessarily "better" overall.

I have more than 20 50mm. Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 LTM would be a better choice if you want good balance price, size and optical performance.

Raid I have the Canon LTM 50mm f1.4 but not the 7 Artisans lens. Never the less it is my impression from using the Canon plus looking closely and critically at images on the web made with the 7 Artisans lens that the Canon is a little colder (bluer) in its rendering and in some ways has a more crisp / modern look to its images. Is this fair or do you think otherwise? Not saying either is better though one may be better than the other for certain images. The Canon has a reputation for being able to perform in many differing situations. Not sure the 7 Artisans is the same in that sense as I do not have one. I think the latter would suit me fine though as I am inclined to mainly shoot people, portraits and street. (And I also like the Sonnar look)

Here is the photo at f1.1 and 0.7cm. It is a lens with character wide open Voigtlander has a sharper image. These two lenses are just different at f1.1. Cheaper does not mean bad.

Here is my 7A 1.1 shot at 1.1, with a 1:1 (!) close up.
What is this softness that you speak of? Perhaps the examples that you have looked at were slightly out of focus. That will make any lens look soft. And when you shoot at 1.1 you need to nail focus:

Hi Peter,
You are right about the color being colder for the Canon. I like both lenses, but the Canon is lighter than the 7A lens.

finally used my Z7 for something that did not involve scanning film.
I shot this in jpeg (accounts for the blown highlights) to see how the exposure would be.
Interestingly with my camera, if I shoot in jpg then the final output exposure matches what I see. When I shoot RAW the final output is way underexposed unless I move the histogram all the way to the right.

Z7, 7Artisans 50 1.1 @ 1.1
