Voigtlander 'Vintage Line' 50mm 1.5 ii

voigt_m_50mm_f1.5_ii_nik_mc-1.jpg

it takes the LH-6 hood, available separately

here mounted on a Leica M6 classic titanium with matching titanium Rapidwinder - one of only 30 titanium Rapidwinders produced.

Thanks for the image comparison. That summicron however looks fantastic against the voigtlander line up. Torn between getting the new 50mm f1.5 vs heliar 50mm f2 collapsible. Will have to wait until the reviews are out for the new 50 f1.5 until i decide. Im always a sucker for 50s. I wonder to myself why do i need i another 50 when i have already the 50 summicron lol.

Is there any linear distortion? Distortion was the weak point of the Voigtländer/Cosina 50mm f/1.5 aspherical lenses. This one seems to be of a totally different formula.

Well, yes I understand MC from SC but it has been hard for me to really understand how MC & SC separate themselves other than what I read (more/less flare contrast) What I'm trying to do, I suppose, is just try and find something I own or have used to set as an example. Or find some sort of comparison of MC and SC lenses which I really haven't been able to find.

Maybe I'm thinking too much into it.

I hear you. The differences between V1 and V2 of this lens would be greater based on the optical changes. I haven't yet seen a comparison of the MC vs SC versions of this lens. Practical comparisons between Voigtlander's SC and MC coatings in general are tough to find it seems (for me as well, anyway). In general I know that people who shoot black & white often prefer the SC coating for increased tonality in their images. MC images generally have more color pop (vs pastel, less-saturated colors on SC lenses), less tendency to flare, and increased contrast. From my understanding the increase in contrast may also contribute to a greater sense of perceived sharpness, though I don't know to what degree.

A lower contrast negative is usually easier to print in black and white. Single coating gives a lower contrast image and no coating at all gives an even lower contrast. Lower contrast does not mean lower sharpness, on the contrary.

A low contrast lens does not mean that the final picture (in black and white) taken with the lens is soft too. A good printer can produce hard images from negatives made with with low contrast lenses.

I have a hunch that the only optical benefit of MC over SC is flare resistance, not contrast or color. The main takeaway from Jon Manjiro's tests of the SC and MC 35/1.4 Noktons was that the SC had a smidgen more flare around lights when the aperture was wide open at f/1.4, but they were the same at f/2.8.

How many of each version is Cosina going to make? I bet collector value is going to be the biggest difference. 😀

Mine arrived today. The size is much smaller than the C-Sonnar, which uses 46mm filters/hoods. The lens is small and dense, feels almost like holding a Canon 50/1.5.

The finish is gorgeous.

Posed with my 1934 CZJ Sonnar 5cm F1.5, Nickel finish- converted to Leica Mount.
And- for size, the 40/2 Summicron.

I chose the Multi-Coated version. There are more surfaces in this lens than a traditional Sonnar or 1-2-2-1 Planar.

Wide-Open on the Leica M9.

I'll be keeping this lens on the M9, and also try it out on the M Monochrom.

This lens is amazing in that it is so compact, like a Sonnar. I am not going to take it apart.

Lovely shots Brian... Happy to see YOU here again !

The new Nokton seems to render bokeh, light, flare quite Smooth and Beautiful.
You have given Us wonderful eye candy.

Your fault Brian, I just bought one... 🙄 😀

Thanks for the welcome back.

You will love it. This lens is unique. I can't quite place the design- but it reminds me of an 8 element Sonnar 5cm F1.5 that was designed by Bertele, but not produced.

You can see a "Hint of Swirlies" in this image.

I did some comparison shots between the VM f1.5 v1 and v2 when I first got the new one.

I think the v2 has better corner sharpness but also a bit more light falloff.
