New Accessories from Zeiss

A lot of people would pay premium prices for high-performance lenses.

Let's imagine that Zeiss would come out with a 35/1.4 that would have almost zero distortion (like the 35/2 Biogon), no flare (ditto) and high-resolving power, while being accetably large.

And: no focus shift ;)

I think that there definitely is a market for upscale lenses. The M9 has reinforced that trend IMHO.

I beleive the reason that Zeiss don't have faster ZM lenses is that they won't compromise image quality. i.e. if going wide causes the resulting MTF figures to fall outside their standards, they won't do it. BUT it's possible they are going to relax their standards to appeal to the consumerist tendancies of the M Mount market. We'll just have to be patient instead of wildly speculating just like the average consumer.

remember those zeiss lenses ( except 16 and 85/2) are not made by zeiss. Cosina/voightlander make em and aren't good enough for zeiss to let them do the 16 and 85/2. So if zeiss were to make very high performing 1.4 lenses, would they be any better than voightlander lenses and if not then why bother because everyone would buy the voightlander cos they are cheaper. But if zeiss makes em then they will cost a lot of money and therefore compete directly with leica on price.
And how many people here have got the zeiss 85/2 and 16? Not many becuase they don't like the pricing. And how many who want 1.4 lenses will pay new prices for them if made by zeiss?

Interesting that this thread has gone over to more of a lens discussion. Personally, I don't consider lenses to be accessories, but maybe by Zeiss' definition I will have to stand corrected. ;)
New half case and strap, anyone?
Or if Cosina's news is anything to go by, then maybe it is something to do with third party accessories - optical viewfinder for your Nikon dSLR, anyone?
:D

If Zeiss is to offer a couple of e-mount primes, then there’s an outside chance that they’ll also be offering the associated purpose built finders as accessories as well.
Not generic hot-shoe finders but purpose built Sony NEX interface finders.

Doug, that's an interesting theory. I've toyed with the idea of ditching my Nikon D40 and its couple of lenses for a NEX5 plus accessories (especially M mount adapter). That might just put me over the edge.

Sad as this may seem, why do you guys at all assume this announcement will have anything to do with ZM lenses or the Ikon camera? Surely this makes up a tiny, tiny portion of Zeiss' market, and I would expect more ("boring"?) SLR lenses instead...

So true, the big money is outside of our niche, but I think the dSLR market is already fairly mature and Zeiss' is probably after the next big thing in either the MFT or E mount.

I think Zeiss will release some VF's for the NEX system.
They allready confirmed that they are releasing lenses for the NEX system. And there is a strong rumor that these lenses are based on the ZM lenses. So, vf's would be a logical accessory.

Filter and stuff like that, would this make sense?

Filters would be excellent, too bad they won't be doing the smaller sizes that the ZM lenses are going to need - at least not yet. UV and CPol are a given, but I'd love to see some ND filters as well.

But does the world need another camera strap?

Because good optics can be somewhat heavy at times, Carl Zeiss now offers a special camera strap with air cell padding for SLR cameras."[/I]

Well Zeiss, you know a strap is NOT the solution to heavy lenses and bodies ( e.g. D3s + ZF2 35 f/1.4 = 2.1kg ) : make a digital ZM RF for us - that will get the weight down.

I wonder if the ridiculously short focus throw on the Voigtländer 25 f/0.95 is so that it does not compete with the Zeiss lenses ( with their long throw calibrated scales ).
