Hey guys, just a quick question. Do you know if it's possible to replace the cloth shutter curtains on my S2 with Nikon F titanium curtains?

Thanks a lot in advance, cheers!

Titanium curtains.

Titanium curtains.

I was told by Grays of Westminster that this couldn't be done, at least to the S3, when they replaced my 'pin holed' curtains. :( :bang:

I don't mean to hijack the thread but who would you recommend to work on Nikon RF's and SLR's these days in the US? I used Essex in the past but they were wiped out in the last hurricane in N Jersey.

Thanks

Stephen Gandy’s repair tech did a great job on my Nikon M several year’s back. The camera was a basket case when I bought it, with a gummed-up shutter curtains and a lens that was so cloudy you couldn’t see through it. The camera came back looking like it was brand new.

Contraringly to what happens with the S3 or SP the whole titanium shutter curtains unit with their drums can't just be transplanted into the S2 but if the F shutter curtains are custom cut to fit the S2 shutter unit drums it can be done, as if you were just having the old & tired shutter curtains replaced with new fabric ones.

FWIW the repair guys at Kiitos recommend against using titanium curtains from a donor camera because weaknesses can be created in the titanium during the removal and reinstall process which may result in curtain failure. They have a stash of new F3 curtains they use instead.

We have not found that to be true. For years we have been using used Nikon F replacement curtains in Nikon SP, S3 & S4.

Not one has come back with any kind of curtain problem at all.

good to know :)

i should have added "to me" (i.e. the guys at Kiitos recommended to me against reusing shutter curtains) in my earlier comment. kiitos just trying to drum up business i suppose...

I guess it all depends on the condition of the used Nikon F titanium curtains... some are like new, some are very tired with metal fatigue.

A good tech should be able to distinguish which is which shouldn't he.

BTW I am keeping a Nikon F shutter unit with good curtains in my parts box, just in case... ;)

I purchased a set of F curtains a number of years ago and have them put away in case I ever want to change the cloth ones in an S3 or SP to metal.

seven or eight years ago I asked the late Pete Smith what he would charge to change out the cloth curtains in my SP with Nikon F titanium ones - his answer "Why would you want to do that?" I thought about it, considered how quite the cloth curtain shutter of an SP is and put that idea out of my mind. My SP was manufactured in 1959, just prior to the switch over to the titanium curtains

what would be the difference, dimensions?
