New Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 lens?

Nice toy if you use old cameras.

My 28 2.8 ASPH is small and light and a very nice lens. Better deal financially than lens under discussion.

Bad lens for Leica, in terms of IQ, according to picture samples:
http://uk.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/M-Lenses/Summaron-M-28-mm-f-5.6/Images
Purple-pinkish cast and too much vignetting for very slow lens.

Leica calling of white lens as something discreet is 🙂 My biggy-piggy Elmarit-M III 28 2.8 is more discreet and optically superior to this .... on M4-P and M-E.

There is no way the lens can be that 'bad'. Vignetting is meant to be gone by 5.6. I'm wondering if they artificially added it in during post processing.
This really looks like shots LOMO posts on their website for their lenses.

If this is really how the lens performs, it is a joke. I already have my Minitar lens that is sharp all over at f8, it is tiny, and it only costs $349. And it goes to f2.8.

Again, I cannot believe the lens produces results like this.

edit: this is Leica's own text:

"Through its combination of extreme depth of field, natural contrast, excellent rendition of details and visible vignetting, the lens gives images a unique character. "

So it is that bad. Wow. It makes me appreciate my Lomo lens sooooo much more. And all those other Russian lenses you can buy for very little money.

Well there's a reason (or several) Garry Winogrand used a Canon 28/2.8, not this one.

It wasn't competent back then. Instead it's a "character lens" the Japanese would appreciate...

😕 Why it has to be so over-generalized ....

You guys are so offended by this lens... hahaha. And if you are after real value, stop talking about Leica altogether (even your used / cheaper stuff is overpriced).

Actually, with all of my used and new Leica gear I have something justifiable in real value after I compared it to something else.

All I was saying about this and only lens - nice build and size doesn't match inferior rendering according to provided samples on official site. And I'm not WB, Color Checker, Grey Card guy, I do like LOMO Minotar colors on film and digital.

I wasn't bashing Leica for the pricing of this lens, BTW.

I think it was in response to Tom A who said:

nasmformyzombie is quite rightly saying that a lot of us only have the choice to not buy it, as $2k for a very limited lens is not affordable to buy.

As for Leica being irrelevant and not innovating, how about the SL and the Q, above and beyond the Monochrom? Show me a Nikon innovation? They haven't innovated since the F :bang:

Seriously? Do you even use Nikon gear? or gear from any other manufacturer? Nikon specific, ever heard of CLS flash? matrix metering? How is the Q and SL innovative?

I use Nikon D750 as well as Leica gear.

Matrix metering is crap. Just a fancy name for avg metering. I get better exposures with my M7 than my F6 or D750 using the matrix setting. it does not work as claimed - where it is meant to base the exposure on what is in focus. Any hint of back lighting throws it off.
CLS flash? I heard good things but have not yet used this option as most of my shooting is in ambient light conditions.
Funny, I much prefer to use my F6 over the D750, and I much prefer to shoot Leicas over either as I find them far more enjoyable to use. There is nothing on them that requires adjusting to as they are so simple - in a good way.
The D750 definitely has a kick a$$ sensor, and its auto WB is far superior to that on my M240. The D750 is just a boring camera to use (and for me other DSLRs too). Because it is so easy there is little challenge - for me - and this kills any inspiration to go out and shoot. Again for me. YRMV

I am offended by it. Not from a value perspective but from an imaging perspective. I never would have expected such a slow wide angle lens from Leica to have such vignetting.
What I was expecting was a tiny, super high quality lens both optically and mechanically. Pretty much the raison d'etre of Leica's being.
That was why I bought Leica glass.

I am also amused by it. By the fact that they are using the LOMO spin to market it.

I was answering the question about other camera companies (specifically Nikon not being innovative). I beg to differ on the Matrix metering. CLS flash is BY FAR the best thing since TTL flash and its several leaps ahead in my opinion. You really need to give it a go to see how good it is.

I'm an odd duck: I want vignetting. I want lens flare. But I also want high quality materials and degree of finish as I hate dropping hundreds of dollars on glass that's flimsy. $6-700 purchased 5-6 times vs $2.4K purchased once? To me it makes some sense.

If the preliminary photos are correct and not altered in post, it's attraction to me is that it's so different in character than my 3,8/24mm Elmar. That lens is "perfect" wall-to-wall. To have another lens with the same character that's somewhat less wide would be, well, totally boring.

It's great having a 50 Summicron, 35 Summicron ASPH, and the above mentioned Elmar lenses for what they do. But to add to that mix a 1,5/50 C Sonnar, 40mm/35mm Nokton Classic SC, and a slightly hazy 3,4/21 Super Angulon and now drama is introduced into the repertoire in a way a computer program has yet to match. And I slot this new/old lens in the drama category as Leica has consumers who want Little Drama already covered with the 2.8/28.

And yes, I'll be waiting for the used market.

How is that innovation? Just a incremental advance in my opinion

introduce (something new, especially a product).

They are the first to market with it ...implementing a device that has been improved upon. Sure, whoever manufactured the EVF innovated, but Leica's implementation was innovative as well.
