new lens(es)

You`re probably right about the focus Brian.... I have deleted most of the bad pictures, so I can`t post them, but the end reslt is that I don`t want to use the J-8, it`s just to unpredictable for me.
All 36 exposures with my new CV 35mm Classic was good...
The J-8`s is all over Ebay, so I maybe will buy a couple more, and try to find a good one.
I look forward to try the 85/2, though.... if I only can find a good hood for it... 🙂

I want to post one of the better ones I got with the Jupiter 8 too, so I don`t scare people away from buying these bargains....🙂

I have started an "LTM Telephoto Gallery" and will be adding to it. I have several rolls to scan in, including more from the Jupiter-9. I liked one of the pictures so much that I put into a frame and surrendered to my 79-year old Mom, a retired nurse, for helping us with Nikki's recovery. I will scan and post it this weekend; but it is one of those fleeting looks that you never know if you caught it on film or not when using an SLR.

The difference between the two J-8 photos of the motorcycles is amazing. I'vgot 12 J-8's and I've never had a bad one.

I have noticed that some of the J-8's in LTM have some play in the diaphragms. Given that you camera body probably has very consistent exposures (unlike an old Russian body) Is it possible that the contrast variation was caused by the f-number changing slightly between shots? How uniform is the density of the negatives? Is one more or less exposed than the other?

-Paul

Yeah it could be that, I can`t be 100% sure....
The Bessa R seems very consistant, no problem there....
The negatives is in the trash, so I can`t check them....
I took two rolls with the J-8, and had a lot of questionable shots, and all 36 came out fine with the CV lens. It could be flare, I`ll see if I can find a 40.5mm hood and try again....

Doesn't look like flare to me, Amund. I would expect flare to give uneven densities across the negative, and affect some areas more than others. Your pics are consistent, different to the same degree across the frame. My first thought was they were two different prints/scans from the same negative!

My best guess is that there's an exposure difference, maybe a stop or two, between the pics, that leads to this observed contrast difference. But hard to believe that could happen easily without deliberate change by the shooter.

These are with my $2 (from Richard Tillis of Woodmere camera) Jupiter-8 on my Kiev 4a, 1979 vintage. Metering with the Selenium Meter. JPEG did not do them Justice!

A Girl and her Dinosaur

Dino! Remember, Flowers are Friends, NOT FOOD!

I would agree that the wind is not butter smooth, but the Shutter action is perfect, meter accurate, and lens is quite sharp. I put a Jupiter-8 on my Contax IIIa and moved the Sonnar over to a Nikon RF, which I changed the Film-to-Flange distance by using shims to better accommodate the Contax-mount lenses. The Jupiter-8 locking pin requires filing to get it onto a Nikon RF. The Helical is in the camera, and mine appears right-on. Remember that the Jupiter-8 is a (nominal) 52.3mm lens compared with the Leica 51.6mm. "RUMOR" has it that the Fed's and Zorki's were calibrated to go with the 52.3mm standard. So when you use a Russian normal on a Leica, the actual focus is a little behind what is indicated by the camera. If that is indeed the case, it is like using a Zeiss lens on a Nikon RF.

Well my $27 Canon all-chrome version 50mm F1.8 in LTM arrived this afternoon. The seller, "shelton-classics-co", gave an accurate description of the interior flaws as FOG, not fungus. 45 Minutes, requiring the use of some recessed retaining pin pliers, and the lens is crystal clear. I will be testing it out this weekend. The distance-scale agrees with my Summarit on the Canon 7. Now all that has to happen is the pictures come out sharp and I am all set! This was a very straightforward lens to take apart.

Brian, when my 7 arrives (it was returned to the seller by some out-of-this-world reason and has been resent today :bang: ) we'll have to talk about where to get nice lenses for it 🙂

Meanwhile, as promised and following the thread, a couple of pics from the Industar 26M mounted on a Fed-2 (d).

Seville, Feria de Abril 2003 (my 2nd or 3rd rf shot ever)

My brother, sometimes informal but always elegant (learned it from me 😀)

And well, I've yet to prepare a delicious pizza so better going now !

Oscar,
Nice shots! Very sharp; I like the Sepia tone image of your Brother.

Where to find lenses for the Canon 7... Visiting the DC area any time Soon?

My Favorite Canon 7+ Jupiter-9 Shot for two reasons: 1) A fleeting glance that you know you caught using an RF, and 2) A high-contrast situation best caught by a lower-contrast lens. This is a case where the J-9 did better than the Nikkor 85 or other "high-contrast" lens.

So What Kind of PIZZA are we Having!

Thanks Brian ! About visiting DC soon... sigh... I don't think so...

For all I've read here the J-9 seems a good lens when it's properly adjusted... when not, it just seems a real pain. Just now, after 'loosing' a bid for a nice Walz 43mm vented hood (I ... forgot to bid ! 😱 ) I'm thinking about building my own one for use with the CV pancake. Oh if I could only use Tom Abrahamson's workshop for one day !

Oh, and btw, home-made pizza (using Buitoni's fresh pizza base), always the best one ! yum yum ! 😀

I see Moderator Joe has changed his avatar to one illustrating his new R + 35mm Skopar! Lookin' good, Joe!

And it appears I'll have another VC lens on the way... found a silver 50/2.5 Skopar offered for $175 in a FS posting on photo.net and jumped on it. That seems a very good price, and these are seldom seen on eBay.

I've been curious about this lens, so very popular in Japan, but criticized here as being "soft." Some hasten to add they don't mean unsharp, like Peter as I recall, but I still haven't managed to grasp its nature. Controversial, in any case!

The pincushion distortion I've observed in sample pics is disturbing. But I'm looking forward to exploring the lens for myself. 🙂

doug, so you're the one!!
i was looking at that post but was too slow in deciding.
oh well...
and you noticed my avatar change, yes, that's me holding my new camera. my buddy took the shot with his, uh, digital. the original, larger shot looks way sharper than the avatar though.

joe

I have that Walz Vented hood for a Series VI Adapter; I use it with my Summarit to solve the "bizarre 41mm" thread problem.
I also have a collection of filters in bizarre sizes. A 46mm Nikon multicoated filter and a 60mm filter. If I come across a Summilux and Noctilux at a good price I am ready!

Yep, Joe, I guess that's the same one you saw on Photo.net. I was a bit surprised to note it was up for all of 4 hours before I responded. On some other FS offers, it's been only minutes!

i know!

i think people feel 'safe' buying from others on photo.net and prices can be better there also.
i spent too much time thinking about it. i have 2 russian 50s coming in the mail and wondered if i needed another. but it was a great price and it was a cv lens...oh well.
i hope you enjoy it.

and for me - maybe next time.

joe

joe, better wait until you get your Industars, you may be surprised and they are only a fraction of a stop slower than the skopar.

also, I remember having a compulsive purchase month some time ago. so i ended having 5 parcels in transit which seemed to never arrive, and trust me, you then spend much time thinking about your lost items than taking pictures.

take it easy my friend, it's all about having fun.

brian, i'm finishing another home made hood now, as my bay-I one, it's made using the cap from a 5 liter font-vella water can. if the guy in front of voigtlander is a camera lover, i'm starting to suspect the one after font-vella was a lens hood manufacturer... 🙂 of course now comes all the finishing and paiting, check for vignetting, etc, but sometimes the more fun part is having an idea and turn it into a real item that works...
