After reasonable homework , and clarifying my own ideas on this emotional subject, I've picked up a 1957 Summarit 50mm, 1.5 lens.
It's well preserved for its age. I know this isn't the most desirable or collectable Leica, but the aim is to fulfil many daydreams of experiencing one of these heavy-glassed lenses. And, at Aus $500, about US $357, it suits my nervous beginners budget (will put a pic in the gallery).
Should finish the first roll over the weekend and have some results posted next week. The lens is quite clear to look through normally, but there's a mist when shining a flashlight through the end. Can't wait to see what affect there will be. Any comments on haze experiences?
My first Rangefinder, a Bessa R, has been in use for six months now and the experience is an absolute joy. I'm really appreciating this web site as well, although only joining up a few weeks ago, and this being my first post. My name's Pete, from Melbourne in Australia, which is in the depths of winter at the moment.
The Bessa, and this lens came from a city shop called The Camera Exchange. Wide range of new and second-hand gear, knowledgeable staff, who admit when they don't know something rather than cover up with sales BS. The shop is often very busy, so they're rushed at times, but if you're in Melbourne pay them a visit, the Leica "room" houses an interesting collection.
Until a couple of months ago Viogtlander was distributed in Australia by Leica. There's an official distributor now, a Sydney outfit called Mainline Photography. Prices have dropped since this move (always a good thing).
