New lens excitment, and first post.

After reasonable homework , and clarifying my own ideas on this emotional subject, I've picked up a 1957 Summarit 50mm, 1.5 lens.

It's well preserved for its age. I know this isn't the most desirable or collectable Leica, but the aim is to fulfil many daydreams of experiencing one of these heavy-glassed lenses. And, at Aus $500, about US $357, it suits my nervous beginners budget (will put a pic in the gallery).

Should finish the first roll over the weekend and have some results posted next week. The lens is quite clear to look through normally, but there's a mist when shining a flashlight through the end. Can't wait to see what affect there will be. Any comments on haze experiences?

My first Rangefinder, a Bessa R, has been in use for six months now and the experience is an absolute joy. I'm really appreciating this web site as well, although only joining up a few weeks ago, and this being my first post. My name's Pete, from Melbourne in Australia, which is in the depths of winter at the moment.

The Bessa, and this lens came from a city shop called The Camera Exchange. Wide range of new and second-hand gear, knowledgeable staff, who admit when they don't know something rather than cover up with sales BS. The shop is often very busy, so they're rushed at times, but if you're in Melbourne pay them a visit, the Leica "room" houses an interesting collection.

Until a couple of months ago Viogtlander was distributed in Australia by Leica. There's an official distributor now, a Sydney outfit called Mainline Photography. Prices have dropped since this move (always a good thing).

I guess we're active when you guys should be asleep. The moon and sun are in our sky right now (moon about to go over the edge), must be pretty dark on the other side.

Pete, welcome to the forum.

When it comes to the mist in your lens it really depends on how bad it is. If it's significant it will have an effect on your end-result in terms of loss in sharpness and contrast. It sounds like the camera store you frequent is quite honest - you may want to take it in there and ask them about how it may impact the lens performance - that and ofcourse put a film through and see how it comes out. Problem with that is ofcourse that if you have never used that type of lens before you won't know if the results are typical or degraded so the camerashop may once again be your best option.

Hi Pete,

Welcome and congrats on your new lens 🙂. The news about Mainline handling Voigtlander gear is great, about a week ago I accidentally 😀 bought myself a 15mm/f4.5 lens ...very cool, all the prices are now very reasonable. I'll keep an eye out for your pic's from your Summarit, I'll be interested on your thoughts on it.

I have two Summarits, M-Mount for my Leica M3 DS and LTM for the Canon 7. Both had haze, and I had both CLA'd at Essex. Essex advises that the softer coating used on the Summarit can be damaged by deep cleaning.

The INFAMOUS "HELLO KITTY" TEST...

The above shot is at F1.5 with the Summarit in M-Mount before cleaning. The lens had visible haze, but you had to look for it.

Now after a $90 CLA at Essex, also at F1.5:

I am happy! At the price that you paid, if there is any affect on the photo's, you should ask for a CLA of the lens to be "thrown-in".

Thank's for the replies.

Now I'm busting to see results with the Summarit. The current roll is 36 shot. It's up to 22. Will definitely finish it off this weekend - but that's four days till processing!!!

In this Digicam age patience seems a fading virtue.

Hi Pete, and welcome !!!

There's a solution for those four days waiting, simply load the camera again and keep shooting, you'll have so much fun doing it that you won't even notice how fast the four days will be gone 🙂

BTW when you're at 12 pm there I'm at 12 am here, pretty straightforward, hehe...
