Hello everyone,

I have been reading this forum for several months now and have found it so helpful and so interesting that I thought it was about time that I joined and introduced myself. I have been a Canon SLR user for quite a few years now and have just recently discovered the wonderful world of rangefinders. Though I have only been shooting with the Leica for about 3 1/2 months so far, I am definitely hooked.

My entry into Leica photography was precipitated by the generosity of my father who has just passed his kit along to me. When I think back to my childhood, I have so many memories of my father as a one-eyed man. His second eye seemed always to be hidden behind his M4. And the family has albums full of amazing photographs to show for his efforts.

In recent years, however, my father has moved on to the digital realm. And his Leica has not been getting much use. So he has passed it on to me. As far as a kit to get me started into Leica photography goes, I don't think that I could be much luckier. The body is a black paint M4. The lenses are a 35mm summicron (3rd version), a 50mm summicron (4th version), a 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit (Thin), and a 135mm f/2.8 Elmarit.

I still need to get a good bag. Though the house is absolutely full of camera bags, none of them seem right for the Leica. I am thinking of getting a Domke F-803. However, if anyone can think of a better option for my kit, I would appreciate your suggestions. Also, If anyone has any suggestions for some good reading on Leica photography, I would really appreciate those as well. I just ordered the HCB documentary that has been discussed recently on the forum. I can't wait for it to arrive.

I look forward to being part of future discussions. As I said at the beginning of this post, I have found this forum to be very interesting, entertaining, and informative in the few months that I have been reading it. I am very happy to finally be a member.

And we are happy you joined too Rafael! 🙂 F-803 is an excellent bag for a small Leica kit, there are also clones of that bag (and others) on the auction site. Go there and type in like Domke in the search engine.

For a technical book I would recommend Gunter Osterloh's new book "Leica M - Advanced Photo School". There are so many great photo books - I am a fan of Salgado and HCB but there are also many others. My personal favorite is Josef Koudelka.

You are so lucky to have such a wonderful starter kit! I look forward to seeing some pictures from it in your gallery...

Um, someone pick up my jaw from the floor.

Welcome Rafael, buy dad a new CF card and run away with a big smile on your face before he changes his mind. 😉

Not quite alone, Joe!

Rafael, you're lucky to have such a nice kit to start off with. I'm still scrounging for my first bit of Leitz glass, and there you are with four sterling examples! That kit will get a LOT of use yet, I've a funny feeling! It'll be a good time.

Good reading on Leica. . . hmm . . . how about here? There has to be at least a good book full of nice first person research here on RFF.

And Domke bags are awesome - I'd own one except it's hard to find one that is really weatherproof.

oh yeah, and WELCOME to RFF. I'm always really happy to read a new member's first post.

Welcome, Rafael.

Look at it this way, if your father had used an SLR you'd never have seen any of his face 🙂

Enjoy the M4. Domke bags are good but Billingham Hadleys are more weatherproof and better made IMO. There is nothing in it in size capacity or weight of the bag itself despite the Billingham being more padded.

Very nice outfit! Use it well. Get dad the memory card, good idea. Tell him you use this camera because of all the fond memories of him using it. You want your pictures to be as good as his. He'll eat that up.

Welcome, you'll like it here. What a nice dad you have! My dad was really just into point & shoot, but surprised me one day by digging out a nice Canon F1 and lenses that I never knew he had. Not RF, but still pretty cool and I'm giving it some use too.

Thank you all for the very warm welcome. Joe, I am actually up near Ottawa. But I do get down to Toronto somewhat regularly and would be very interested to meet some other locals. Peter, thanks for the reading suggestions. I will have a look at the Osterloh book. I too am a fan of Salgado and HCB. I also really like the work of ALex Webb.

I have been reading the threads in the archive about when and how often to get a CLA done, so I know that there is quite a range of views on the issue. My M4 has not had a CLA since some time in the early 80s. However, I have not been having any problems with it. Everything seems to be working very smoothly. When I first got the camera, I had intended to take it in to Kindermann right away. But now that I have been using it for 3 1/2 months without issue, I am thinking seriously about saving the money. The camera was not used very often during the past 10 years or so. And it was stored properly. So it's not as though it has been out in the elements for the full 25 years since its last CLA. Still, it's such a wonderful piece of equipment that I would hate to damage it over $250. Any additional thoughts?

Again, thank you all for the warm welcome.

Welcome,
Just wanted to send you "Hello", and let you know that you are very lucky in 2 regards.
1 The "starter" kit seems very far from a starter, with all that great glass, nice.
2 How very wonderful it is that the gear was not left in some dark place for many more years and only given to you with the passing of your Father- original owner- like many I have read about. How much more perfect can you get - to be able to share new experiences of yours with the camera and your father while also recounting some old memories of his using the great gear - Enjoy.

Steve

PS. I too am fairly new hear and to RF, while I purchased my Leica from a store, I intend to share my passion for photography with my Father using the Leica as an starting point.

(sorry for going on...) 😱
Welcome

How wonderful! Welcome to the forums. I know you will, but be sure to share your photos with your father and with us here in the galleries.

Hello All,

I have also just recently joined these forums. Very impressive place. Still a prisoner of the SLR "cave", I am very much curious about the Leica world, and rangefinders in general. Could someone please direct me to a decent 'site or 'sites where the various M's are compared?
Thanks
