*sigh*

What rumours? Who from?

What's the point?

Substantiate.

Validate.

Prove.

Boredom? Mischief? Wishful thinking?

Nothing to see here, move along...

Bill

there will be the "Photokina 2008" in September, remember this thread afterwards and I think my informations I heard will come true. So, if you know something about it, it would be nice to read. And ....... it will cost more than we think now. A reason not to have GAS but to read about it.

Few lens manufacturers will give hostages to fortune by committing to bringing out a new lens that may not work out. The most they will say is that it is 'under consideration', which is nothing like a commitment.

From conversations with more than one manufacturer, I know that a new ultra-fast 50 has been 'under consideration' so it's a bit better than a possibility, but some way short of a promise.

Cheers,

R.

With film speeds so ultra fast nowadays whats the use for such a fast lens. Even the more expensive digitals are pretty good at handling higher iso's. Seems to be a big waste of cash to me.

Yes, but people have been saying that since the 1950s, when Ilford HPS hit 800 ASA, and the 60s when High Speed Ektachrome was ISO 160.

There have always been 'available darkness' photographers, and probably always will be.

it's not much of a secret that the 50/1 Noctilux was discontinued because Raytheon (ex Hughes ex Midland) no longer wanted to make the glass in such small quantities. That resulted in the big Noct price increase in the last 12 months. It is also no secret that Kaufman was talking about the Noct successor at LHSA and PMA, probably a 50/.95.

Unfortunately that also means for a much higher priced all made in Germany Super Noct.

Noct Noct.
Who's there?
No Money.
No Money?
I spent it all on the new Super Noct Noct.

A Noctilux isn't necessary to shoot at low light anymore. This isn't the 60's & I'm not necessarily referring to 800 speed film. I'm referring to films like Ilford Delta 3200 & a reasonably fast lens. For that matter I have loaded 800 asa film in my Yashica with the Yashinon 45/1.7 & have had no problems shooting in low light.

BTW Roger I am enjoying your site & should be a full subscriber in the month of May thanks to Pres. Bushes stimulist package. I have a low ss # and my check will be mailed out about the 3rd.😀

I thought I read some place, maybe even here on rff, in a different thread - it takes a very long time to make the kind of glass that is used in noctilux. It's also a rare glass with some limited supply, if I'm not mistaken. So, the understanding was - once all already made glass is used - there will be no more noctilux made. Based on some comments here - does it mean there is more special glass now? or different technology to make it? Or it will be inferior to current one? Or is it all just a rumor?

Sure, I agree -- for anything resembling sensible photography. But for 1/4 second (0r so) at f/1 and ISO 2500; well, look at:

http://www.rogerandfrances.com/photoschool/ps king.html

'Need' is always a flexible concept in photography, and there are always those who want EVEN MORE speed.

And thanks for the kind words about the site and Geo. W. B.'s stimulus package. I can't think of a better way to spend it, but I'm biased!

So, if they come out with a faster Noctilux, won't they then also take the 'opportunity' to sell us a matching camera with a more appropriate viewfinder/rangefinder baseline? A 1:1 finder?

A .85/.95 Noctilux is going to generate a lot of paranoia about insufficient focus accuracy. And, with the LeicaFolk, paranoia of one sort or the other just means more money will be spent to compensate.
