New R-D1 with shutter problem

My rangefinder experience was with the M6, and I wanted to shift to the digital world despite not having a full frame camera. I just received my new R-D1 yesterday. The camera is new to me and "New" in that I am it's original owner. The shutter will not fire after cocking the shutter after the first exposure. In other words, the shutter will fire once after the camera is first turned on but not a second time without turning the camera off and then on again. All of the settings are default as it came out of the box except that I have applied the v2.0 upgrade to the camera.
Is is a problem with my understanding of the camera's functions or it is defective?

Before committing to any conclusion, check the battery power first. Try the camera with another battery. Also, did you install the new firmware yourself?
Errors in firmware installation can 'kill' cameras. I've heard a few stories (not Epson R-D1 but Canons though) where new owners have rendered their cameras dead after installing an upgraded firmware almost immediately after getting their cameras out of the box.

On its second day of ownership, the camera now functions just fine. Maybe it had wedding day jitters and now that its no longer a virgin it has settled into a routine. When I turned her on this morning she performed perfectly. Needless to say that I am very happy that the camera is functioning properly. Incidently, the first time that I ever held a R-D1 was when I received mine yesterday. I like the weight and the apparent craftsmnship of the exterior the camera. I am still alittle nervous about the internal craftsmanship but I am overall very pleased... today, not yesterday.

Despite its reputation for fragility (or at least the fragility of the rangefinder alignment), I banged mine around on a vacation for 2 weeks in Israel, including jeeps and desert, with no ill effects. Just use it and don't worry about it. I think it's a great camera.

Hi,

I also jumped form an M6 to an RD1, my guess would be that you are on firmware version 1 and the sleep mode had kicked in. Think you then need to press the shutter once to wake up and again to take the pic.
You can change the sleep time in the menus.
I also noticed you need to make sure you fully wind the shutter arm, press to the end otherwise can sometime not shoot
