New RD-1x

I will just echo my thought from the copycat thread...this is terrific. The R-D1 sensor is excellent, if small, and this suggests the whold DRF market is alive and well. I will be sticking with my swivel screen, but this is a great option for new users.

Oddly I just posted a review/appreciation of the R-D1 on my website the other day...here it is

The story on the Adorama site says that it uses the same 6mp sensor as the original RD-1.

Well Adorama must be right cuz it's the internets - and everything on the internets is definitely true.

Anyway, there is a new image processor in the RD1x. That alone makes it interesting to see how the high-ISO images will look.

But anyway Pickett - you didn't say anything directly negative about the camera in that last post, as you have in your previous eight posts - maybe you're gonna end-up buying one after all eh? ;)

What do you mean by chip set? The imaging chip itself is a 6 megapixel APS chip as always.

Nothing has changed. It is still the same camera except for a different "shutter button feel". I expect the same problems as the RD-1 and the RD-1s. Seems like they just retooled production at a higher price. Too bad it is still 6mp. Still it is nice to see Epson taking a plunge again. I don't think this will cause used RDs to drop in price.

It could only work in the RF world. It's the equivalent of Canon reintroducing the 10D with only a larger LCD on the back. They couldn't give them away. Epson, however, gets a thumbs up for doing the same thing.

Mani, perhaps other camera makers will follow Epson's lead. In these troubled economic times, not having to invest in R&D could make reintroductions a solid money maker.

I'm just imagining the threads on DPReview if Canon was to pull similar stunt. Just imagining the s*tstorm that would start makes me smile.

It's always great to discuss the image quality from a piece of electronics when nobody has gotten their hands on the actual item and is only inferring things from bylines in newsfeeds that have gone through umpteen stages of aggregation and redigestion.

i'm just tickled pink!

i have no desire for the new one, such as it is (WTF? you can't flip the screen any more?), but it's mighty sweet knowing it's there if something happens to mine.... and if they come up with a way to quiet the shutter down, i'll be in downright heaven ;)

I suppose this is the best news for existing RD-1 owners - supply of spare parts (if the insides are the same) are assured for longer and perhaps better service now.

I'm sure the fixed screen is to cut down on service & support. The more moving parts, the more things to go wrong.

Anyway, it's good to know that the epson rf isn't dead. I would think twice about trying to understand the move based on a us/europe perspective, as I wonder what the japanese market is for this? With the yen expensive, I'm sure they're hoping to sell these in Japan as much as elsewhere... I also remember someone's comment several months back about the cv 35/1.4–that it was designed to mimic the pre-asph summilux, which had gone up to astronomical prices in Japan as a collector's item. Does anyone know what used rd-1/s prices are in Japan?

Maybe they're just trying to make some quick cash to pad themselves these days.
