New RD-1x

Pretty harsh comment dude. I just took a look at his site and there was many nice pics there, but thats just my opinion ;)

Great of Epson I say!

I agree. As far as the 6mp is concerned, in all honesty, when I am using iso 800, and handheld shots, I don't expect a great deal of resolution....in fact, the image quite often isn't about the rez. Once I process my old Canon 10D shots at iso 800 though Nik's Silver Efex, I've done 14x21 prints that look pretty close to what I'd expect from 35mm B&W film....with the grain. I'm not missing much. And let's be honest....how often are our shots of street and doc work printed even as large as 14x21.

This looks way cool. I'm hoping that it's at least a 14bit A/D converter though.

But 6mp just isn't enough for anyone who wants to crop and/or print larger 8x10.

What utter nonsense! I had a pair of the original R-D1 cameras and absolutely loved them (more so that the M8s I had). And yes, you can most certainly get excellent large prints from this camera. I have 13 x 19" prints that are just stunning.

I'm willing on taking off the one i offered for sale on the classifieds. It's not a good moment right now. I could'nt pay 2000 USD for a new one at the moment, and i'm not sure if i would pay them if i could, already having a relative new one, with the good news of a possible long time servicing, and a removable screen that i like so much.

Good news anyway!

to all who blamed epson

to all who blamed epson

take it easy.

"According to Epson UK, the R-D1x has being released only in Japan and there are no plans for a European release." (from Dpreview)

nobody is obliged to buy one outside japan.

i hope this makes you less disappointed...

more reliable? have you owned one? i am amazed at all the negativity coming out from people i've never heard from before.... the Epson R-D1 has to be one of the more rock-solid digital cameras out there (and i am not gentle with mine and i'm the third owner)! where is all this coming from?

Well, Perhaps rock solid outer but internally it surly has some flaws.

I owned mine now for One and a half year, and have had some serious problems.

So far from begining the Lcd is non working wich was the state I bought it in, as a partly defect demo-unit.

Later on the shutter have had som problems with not beeing able to cock it on 3 different occasions, this however solved itself after between 2-20 failed attempts to cock it.

Further on the RF is getting a bit misaligned verticaly just this winter, and the rubber is getting loose from the body.

I also belive that to some extent the bad reputation reg. the reliability are just cause to rumours.
But certainly not all.

Also Espons own repairs of the camera is truly a joke.
Mostly just switching defect cameras to new and refurbished ones.

I´d say the owners are really lucky to get the service they need from Steve.

Do you people complaining about this camera actually use the R-D1 or follow its used price? Used R-D1's go for around $1500. So, a new one with full warranty at $2K is a BARGAIN. As for the sensor, in terms of image quality and color, especially at high ISOs, it is among the best sensors I have ever used, even to this day. Not even Leica has been able to improve on its 3 year-old sensor in the M8.2. A company like Epson is not going to make huge new investments in this tiny market to bring a new product to market. It is a gift horse. Stop looking it in the mouth.

Anyone heard of how big this production run will be?
I´m already saving up for a surplus-priced R-D1xG house in 2012 :D

Even if the new launch simply shaves off a couple hundred bucks from used prices, I shall be happy, it will help make up for the lousy £/$ rate.

Together with the fact that Steve Choi has mastered how to repair these things, I'm overjoyed to see the resurgence of what is really the standout rangefinder camera of the last decade. Yes, the M8 has its advantages, but this is a much braver design, with a terrific control system.

The fact it's only 6MP makes it even more quirky and unconventional - which, let's fact it, is part of its charm.

WELL SAID!!

In regards to the 28mm color skopar, all of the promo shots seem to feature the camera with this lens mounted on it. Perhaps it is going back in to production?

This is great news, in every possible way.

It was actually leaked here on this site last year, by one of the well-connected knowledgeable people who contribute here, but for some reason not a whole lot of people picked up on it at that time.

I sold my R-D1 largely because of that, then gave up when there was no official announcement at Photokina. Bought an M8 and am very very happy. But that has nothing to do with it. The release of a new R-D1 is just fantastic news!!! (too bad about the fixed LCD. Luigi case to cover it may be a good idea!).

300,000 yen isn't just the msrp, it is the price at which the camera is available for order on the Epson website. This means that the camera will actually be US$3,000.
Why does Adorama list $2000 when Epson's own site is taking orders for 3k?
