New server in.

Great right now -- keeping our fingers crossed!

Yesterday it got so bad that my work server was actually blocking my access to the site, which got me VERY concerned that I would no longer be able to squander work time here. But all seems to be well now.

Congratulations and thanks, Jorge. I was away for a few days, and came back to find it was taking minutes just to download the RFF front page. I was afraid something bad had happened. Glad things are back to normal. Actually, even better...the whole site feels snappier. Glad you're back!

I am away this weekend and only have access to dial-up. The site is more responsive now with this dial-up connection than it has been lately with my normal broadband connections. Excellent.

I think I will log off now and go take some pictures 🙂

What I just cannot understand is that everybody seems just to be happy around here and sending congratulations to webmeister.

Isn't it just so, that RFF offered slow line, bad performance, breakdowns almost every day for several weeks. In a word - bad service?

Now the necesseray fixes seem to be halfway done (well, the gallery still looks awful...) but this being nothing than a user just regularly could expect from a site.
It's just like if your fishmongers promises not to sell rotten fish anymore and all his customers jump of joy. That's weird ... weird.

Swann the difference here is that Jorge is himself an RF fan and offers all these services for free. Most other sites you pay. It's like getting free fish from your fishmonger.

@Socke
Sure I did, and I still do.

The argument with the free fish isn't unexpected. Two words:
1. Even unbought rotten fish smells
2. I have the impression that we pay here with taking note of advertisment.

Am I wrong?

No right or wrong, Swann. You can always throw smelly fish into a soup. 😉 Here in New England they are very fond of such a thing. Its called chowder.

You could say that you actually save through the adverts here rather than paying. Assuming you are already going to buy a specific piece of equipment, you can sometimes get a small discount or free shipping from some of the advertisers - quite a good deal. I have bought from several of the vendors here: Popflash, Photo Village, Cameraquest. If you click through to the vendor site from an advert on RFF, RFF gets a fee and you may get a discount. Everybody wins really. 🙂

i'm guessing that the advertisers pay for or at least part of the cost of running this site.

but the bottom line is that jorge is a hobbyist just the same as we are.
he decided to set up rff as part of his hobby.
he also has a family and a job and, i assume, a life.

lots to juggle.

we choose to be members here and also choose our level of participation.
i guess some of us choose to send kudos while others complain, some choose to support the work of others while some choose to attack.

and still, there is no membership fee or membership drives or complaints from other members about how cheap someone is for not being a member or threats of no posting photos if you are not a member.

all in all, i think this is a pretty good deal.

And one can actualy use this website without deactivating javascript, blocking cookies and using adblocking measures to the extreme like on other sites.

To fee or not to fee, that' not the question.......

No, not wrong.

Tho this site is possibly still " profit-free" it isn't "non-commercial".
It's just a business are any other on it's way to the brake-even, which , once passed, will bring Jorge some return on it's invest.

No matter if this site ever will be a profit orientated site or stay a non-profit hobby,
you are right: All contributing members help to come to the point of break even, also without paying a donation.

This is my understanding of this win-win business and what I assume to be the background of your remarks too, which were, not surprising, immediately categorized as an "attack" 🙄

Seems some cannot deal with any kind of remarks concerning this site which are not clearly positive . All the rest is an attack, complaint, whining or what else kinda mean and "destuctive" behaviour and it can even happen that you are bombed down with "I get tired of this crap" by our esteemed moderator Joe, if he got a bad day.

So stay positive , Swann, be nice and friendly and let your impudent remarks at home. 😀

Regards,
Bertram
"Siehst Du den Hut dort auf der Stange nicht ??!!" 😀 😀

'So stay positive , Swann, be nice and friendly and let your impudent remarks at home.'

that's what i like to hear!
thanks for the support bertram.

seriously?
i see it as prt of 'my job' here to keep thing as positive as possible and i honestly do not see anything wrong with that.
bertram, you seem to think i should behave as a perfect person with no moods. i do not know how to do that.
i do know that when people get negative here and start small fires it's the moderators who usually have to put them out, somehow. and for that many see us as the bad guy.

maybe try being a bit more positive and supportive of me and maybe my mood will get better.

Joe, maybe you mean it all better than it sounds , I am willing to asume it. But one thing is for sure:
To keep all negative remarks as a "small fire" is a pretty totalitarian understanding of the moderation job. If this word is too strong for you I'd say it is as at least undemocratic.
Not all who have to say something negative are arsonist here !! And the my feel violated because you treat them as arsonist ! Even negative remarks have to be considered differentiated and with respect.
To put these "fires" out with verbal dynamite is perceived as violence, and violence generates more violence, as we all know. Not a constructicve thing, this fire brigade job.
