casualphotophile.com is a great site to check out anyway. This app being developed looks like a great way for people primarily concerned with posting to social media in getting their stuff out there.
What I really like about it is the instant film profile adjustments. I'd love it if they'd make those available for LightRoom etc.

Apps like this will encourage peeps to shoot film, as now the barrier of sharing their shots will be lower and cheaper than before.
The more that people shoot film, the better a place the world becomes..

Hey guys! Abe here. I'm the developer of FilmLab, and a longtime RFF reader and occasional participant. With FilmLab, I'm hoping to make a tool that can be useful to a lot of film shooters, even if it doesn't replace their dedicated film scanner.

To give a quick overview of what I'm trying to do: Under the hood of FilmLab is a software engine that can automatically detect and perspective-correct film frames, and convert negatives to positives. In the first version of the app, this engine is used three ways: to give a live preview of negatives as positives, to capture and convert film images with your smartphone camera, and to process files you've created with a separate camera and lens. It's far from complete, but the results so far are promising. I'm launching a Kickstarter campaign this week this week which will hopefully let me spend more time working on the project.

Good question. I would need to learn more about how Lightroom profiles work, I think. Over the long term I would definitely like to take some of the underlying software in FilmLab and make it available on the desktop for power users. But I think the mobile app version is going to keep me 100% busy for the coming months! 🙂

I just backed the kickstarter. I am moderately color blind. All of my own photography is B&W. But I have color negatives from family members that I have been unable to print to anybody's satisfaction, so I just make B&W prints of them. This looks like a possible solution.

Hi marcr1230, sorry I missed your question before. When used with your smartphone camera, the scans from FilmLab certainly won't beat a dedicated scanner. But if you use FilmLab to process scans taken with a high-end camera and macro lens, you're only limited by the source.

In general though, I would say FilmLab isn't really competing with dedicated scanners. But it has a different set of strengths and weaknesses compared to dedicated scanners, which I hope make it a better fit for some uses. One more tool in the toolbox for film shooters!
