[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

They shouldn't have charged you duty, if it shipped to the US. Must have used the incorrect harmonized code. UPS will typically charge a brokerage fee, but not USPS.

I am surprised when I received the tax collect notice...

Yes. Except the tax, they charged me brokerage fee also... I am very unhappy with their service.

I bought a lens from Setadel Studios a few years back. Ironically an 8-element that looked pristine but had haze. FedEx charged me, the sender, $100 for customs when all I was doing was returning it to the seller.

You never know with these customs guys..
As there is a lot that can go wrong..

If you know the code, you can dispute the charge.

This is why I posted the code. 🙂

Often it's the seller that doesn't know the code, so make sure to tell the seller to use it on the customs document and describe it as an 'objective lens for camera'

Very nice!

I suddenly realise this is the first new lens for a film camera I have bought standalone (rather than one that came on a camera) since I bought my Zuiko OM 28mm f2.8 back in 1982 for my OM2n.

Or, if not quite so purist, since the 50mm f1.4 D Nikkor Af that came with my F5 back in about 2000.

I learned 25 years ago, from Tom Abrahamsson, that UPS between the U.S. and Canada was a no-no, that there would always be charges. I do not think the same thing happens with the other carriers.

And parenthetically, Canada Post seems to have its own issues, mostly extreme slowness. I once was in l'Estrie for an dental appointment in early December, and used my presence there to mail an Xmas card to the Abrahamssons in Vancouver. It took a month to arrive. USPS to Canada is much faster. I learned my lesson.

I don't mind paying custom charges but UPS's brokerage fee is famously outrageous.

Learnt it the hard way (as per a typical UPS woe story) years ago for a $30 B&W filter from KEH. Shipping was like $10. Had to travel to UPS's warehouse which is at the edge of the town to pay $40 in brokerage fee and $20 tax or so.

USPS/Canada Post all the way since then...they've got culprits which I could bear with.
